When emotions run high, connection can be one of our most powerful tools. Whether it’s a kindergartener struggling with a change in plans or a middle schooler feeling overwhelmed by homework, knowing how to respond in the moment isn’t always easy!
Last month, we explored how behavior is communication. This month, we're looking at what we can do with that understanding.
When children are overwhelmed, frustrated, or upset, it can be harder for them to listen, problem-solve, or access the skills they already have. Before jumping into explanations, problem-solving, or consequences, sometimes the most helpful first step is helping them feel safe, connected, and supported.
Try connecting before correcting:
| • | Stay grounded. Take a breath, soften your tone, and give yourself a moment before responding. Our calm presence can help children find theirs.
| • | Acknowledge the feeling. Try, “I can see this is really frustrating,” or “That didn't go how you hoped.” You don't have to agree with a behavior to validate an emotion.
| • | Offer support and space. Some kids need closeness, while others need a little room to regroup. Ask, “Would you like some help or a little space?”
| • | Revisit when ready. Once things have settled, reconnect, problem-solve together, and practice what might help next time.
Connection doesn't mean removing expectations or avoiding accountability. In fact, connection can make accountability more meaningful. When children feel safe, heard, and supported, they're better able to reflect on what happened, understand how their actions affected others, and participate in problem-solving or making things right. We can hold firm boundaries while helping children take responsibility and build the skills to navigate difficult moments differently next time.
Try it at home: The next time emotions run high, remember: Connect first. Problem-solve when ready.
