Counseling Corner
Welcome back to the counseling corner! Now that the initial back-to-school excitement is settling, the reality of early alarms, new routines, and full-day schedules is setting in. Transitions take time, and it is completely normal if your student (and your entire household) is feeling a bit extra fatigued right now.
Here are a few practical ways to help ease the adjustment:
Prioritize the Sleep Reset
| • | Maintain consistency: Keep bedtimes and wake times within a tight window—even on weekends.
| • | Unplug early: Turn off screens 45 minutes before bed to help internal clocks adjust.
Build in "Decompression Time"
| • | Expect fatigue: Kids expend tremendous energy self-regulating all day; after-school moodiness is normal.
| • | Offer quiet downtime: Give them 20–30 minutes to unwind before starting homework or asking about their day.
Ask Targeted Connection Questions
| • | Spot stress signals: School anxiety often manifests as irritability, stomachaches, or morning resistance.
| • | Use open-ended prompts: Try asking, "What are you looking forward to?" or "What would make this week easier?"
| • | Listen before fixing: Validate their feelings rather than dismissing them with "There's nothing to worry about."
Streamline the Morning Launchpad
| • | Prep overnight: Pack bags, lay out outfits, and fill water bottles the night before to save brainpower.
| • | Use cues: Hang a visual checklist by the door for younger kids, or have middle schoolers set their own morning reminder alerts.
We are here to help navigate this transition period alongside you. Please reach out if you have any questions or if there are specific ways we can support your family!
As a reminder: If you have a topic or burning parenting question you'd like us to feature in a future issue, drop your ideas into our Counseling Corner Interest Request Form!
