Enviromental Education

We believe providing a strong connection with the natural world is essential to the development of the heart, mind, and body of our scholars

Because of our commitment to environmental education across curricula, we provide opportunities for all students to cultivate and demonstrate an understanding of ecology and environmental stewardship.

From scientific research to building awareness and appreciation of the natural world, our ‘EE’ program empowers our scholars to take a scientific approach to being environmental changemakers.

Earth Day is Everyday

Every April, Evergreen hosts a hands-on Earth Day celebration packed with action-oriented service, creative projects, and environmental learning. Proceeds from our accompanying annual Plant Sale directly support our Environmental Education (EE) program.

Campus Stewardship in Action

Earth Day gives students active ownership of our school grounds through hands-on, developmentally appropriate projects:

  • Water Stewardship: Maintaining campus bioswales and rain gardens to protect nearby Haw Creek from stormwater runoff.

  • Campus Maintenance: Tending school gardens, maintaining trails, and mulching outdoor learning spaces.

Innovative Research

In 2025, our EE teacher centered our curriculum around a natural phenomenon called ‘crown shyness’ and utilized a drone to map our campus tree canopy. Over the next few years, students will be researching our campus’ canopy to study the effects of crown shyness.
