Counseling Corner

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a dedicated time to raise awareness, break the stigma surrounding mental health, and foster compassionate conversations within our community. Suicide prevention is something we can all participate in, whether by learning the warning signs, offering a listening ear, or knowing where to turn for help.
Throughout this month, check back here each week as we share practical tips, educational articles, and trusted resources to help support your mental well-being and the safety of those around you.

Separation Anxiety & Stress-Free School Transitions—From Little Kids to Big Kids
Some children skip happily into school, while others struggle with separation, worry, or big feelings at the start of the day. These difficult transitions can happen at any age–A fifth grader refusing to get out of the car, a middle schooler with a stomachache every morning, and a kindergartener clinging at the classroom door can all be communicating distress—just in different developmental languages. While younger children may cry or cling at drop-off, older children and teens may show their anxiety differently—through irritability, physical complaints, repeated reassurance-seeking, refusal to get ready, or worries about what might happen during the day.
The goal is not necessarily to make all anxious feelings disappear before school. Instead, we can help children build confidence in the message: "I can feel nervous and still do hard things." Predictable routines, calm adult support, and confidence-building opportunities can make mornings feel safer and more manageable over time.
Whether your child is five or fifteen, the underlying message can be remarkably similar:
"I see that this is hard. Your feelings are safe with me. You don't have to love this moment to get through it. There are safe adults who can help you when I'm not there—and we will reconnect."
With consistency, patience, and plenty of opportunities to practice, many children will learn that separation and transitions may feel uncomfortable—but they are temporary, manageable, and survivable.
When Might a Family Need Additional Support?
Some school-morning anxiety is common, especially during transitions or stressful periods. However, additional support may be helpful if anxiety is intense, worsening, significantly interfering with school attendance or daily life, accompanied by persistent physical complaints, or making it difficult for a child to participate in normal activities.
Families are always welcome to reach out to the school counseling team if they have concerns about how their child is managing school transitions.

No Country for Mothers Documentary Screening on 9/13 from 5-9pm
‘No Country for Mothers’ is an eye-opening documentary film that exposes the unspoken realities facing mothers across the nation. Combining intimate personal stories with powerful economic insights, the film pulls back the curtain on critical issues like accessible childcare, paid family leave, and maternal health—illuminating how systemic gaps impact not just individual families, but our entire society.
Evergreen mothers Ann Odom and Courtney McManus will be facilitating a live discussion as part of the screening event to further facilitate much-needed connection, gain valuable insights and help us be a part of shaping a future that truly values and supports mothers.
