Community Builders

Community Builders was born from a desire to get to know our Evergreen Community and build the village we want to see in the world. Through monthly low-lift meetings at libraries, at the school, and at local businesses, we gather to get to know our parent community and build relationship!

We strive to offer different opportunities at different times of day, and different days, so that more people have a chance to make it out!

Here are the next 3 dates:

Thursday, August 28th- Popsicle Pop-Up @ the School:
Picnic Island is the grouping of picnic tables that you drive around in car line and is part of the trail that leads up from the lower lot.

Sunday, September 21st- Family Picnic at Evergreen 3pm-5pm

Friday, October 10th - Family-friendly happy hour @ Highland Brewing: 4pm-6pm

Click the graphic to join the Community Builders WhatsApp and receive event invites/reminders.

Fundraising is never Sweeter

Fundraising is never sweeter than when you are gathering flowers in a field at dusk while the children play.

Pack a picnic dinner and bring the family!

September 9th from 5-7pm
Little Farm, Black Mountain
is inviting Evergreen Families to come to their Swannanoa Field to gather, pick, arrange, and kick back on the beautiful property that fills their farmstand!

Prices start at $20. Owners, and Evergreen parents, Mary and Kiera will be donating 75% of the proceeds to the school, making this fun summer’s end activity a great way to support our school!

Come “Be the Village” amongst the blooms!

Locking schedule for lower lot:

The gate will be unlocked each day at 7:45am.
Staff will re-lock the gate at 8:45am.

Monday afternoon the gates will be opened for one hour starting at 1:00pm.

Tuesday - Friday the gates will be opened for one hour starting at 2:30pm.

Attendance in August and september

Get the school year started on the right foot! Establish a routine that shows your students the importance of being on time and the importance of consistent attendance. Students should arrive to school between 8:00-8:20am so they have time to store their belongings and greet their friends before the announcements and the official start of the school day.

In addition to building good habits of scholars, our state and federal funding is directly linked to our attendance during the start of the school year, so we really need a paper trail that reflects the maximum attendance possible! Especially this year with deep cuts to school budgets, we need every dollar to best serve our students and their families. Please help out by refraining from unnecessary absences.

Welcome back Evergreen families,
and welcome to our Counseling Corner!

It is so exciting to have Mrs. Rachel join the counseling team this year, and we are looking forward to connecting with the greater Evergreen community through the Scoop each week. You can find out more about us and the counseling program at Evergreen via the links below.

Volunteer Opportunities

There is always a list of ways to get involved in your classroom newsletter/s! So check out those ways to get into the classrooms, or take advantage of those at-home opportunities!

One great way to get involved if you don’t have daytime hours to give is by providing the staff with a breakfast snack on Thursday or Friday mornings. This tradition was started by parents and is a wonderful end of the week pick-me-up for teachers.

If you’re new to the school, please make sure you have reviewed the Volunteer Policies and submitted a Background Check, both of these items are linked on our Volunteer Page!

Please do not sign up as a field trip driver unless you are certain you can attend. When drivers drop out at the last minute it has a major impact on the planning your grade level team has done to ensure each child has transport, and that there are an appropriate amount of chaperones.

Keep your eye on The Scoop as the year progresses for other opportunities in the garden, during special events, and around campus!

drop-off and Pick up

This year, with the sidewalk construction on New Haw Creek Rd, getting to school on time is going to mean shifting habits! Look for alternate routes. Me: I’m using Cisco Rd. Get on Google Maps and check out alternate routes now.

Tips for Smooth Drop-off

-We strongly recommend dropping your student off between 7:55-8:10am. There is a fee based BeforeCare program available from 7:30-7:55am. After 7:55am there is no charge. Students move from the gym into the main building at 8:10am.

-Please listen to the traffic team’s direction and use crosswalk any time cones are up.

-Help your child transition by encouraging them to gather their things on the way up the drive, start saying your goodbyes and well wishes as you’re pulling around!

-Children must exit the car on the right hand side. If this is not possible, children must be able to get out of the car unassisted, and they must use the center sidewalk to go to a crosswalk.

-Drivers, please stay in the car and let traffic team assist. If your child has lots of gear, needs help, please park - do not hold up the car line

-If you need to park, do not use the spaces adjacent to the gym. Pull past car line and use the gravel spaces or the spaces near Picnic Island.

-Pull up as far as you can, our goal is to keep traffic from backing up onto Bell Rd.

TL;DR: Don’t hold up carline with your shenanigans.

Tips for Smooth Pick Up

-Have your Purple Placard ready at pick-up (given at Orientation)

-Display your placard/s on your dashboard so that staff can easily enter the numbers into their car-line app. Leave the placard/s up until all students you are picking up have been loaded, then remove it to let us know that you are ready to roll!

-Add all the people to your approved pick-up list, make sure they have placards. Additional placards can be requested at the front desk.

-If people picking up students (including parents) do not have a placard, make sure they know to BRING ID. Whomever is at the front desk will be checking ids against the pick-up list.
(If your chosen name differs from the one listed on the driver’s license- just make sure that we have both listed.)

-Early Dismissal ends at 2:30pm (1:00pm on Mondays) Please bear this in mind when scheduling afternoon appointments/making plans.

TL;DR: Always have your placard, if you don’t have your placard have your ID.

Given the time and opportunity, would you buy your teacher a coffee? Would you buy them a coffee every month?

By scheduling a monthly donation of just $5/month you will be helping us reach our Evergreen Annual Goal. The main thing the Evergreen Annual Fund funds is our teachers’ salaries. So skip the coffee and help us fund their ability to buy their own coffee.

Not that we don’t appreciate treatsies. We like treatsies too.

SUMMER IS UPON US!

As the school year winds down, summer brings a welcome shift in pace for many families. Whether your plans include travel, camps, or quiet days at home, summer is a great opportunity to recharge and keep kids feeling supported, structured, and confident. While the busyness of the school year along with extra-curricular activities can make it challenging to find downtime or fill our self-care and/or entertainment buckets, summer offers valuable time to focus on those things more intentionally. Here are three key ways to make the most of the months ahead:

☀️ 1. Prioritize Self-Care—for Kids and Parents

Summer is a great time to build healthy habits that sometimes get lost in the school-year shuffle. Encourage your child to:

  • Spend time outside in nature

  • Get plenty of sleep (yes, even in summer!)

  • Practice mindfulness, breathing, or relaxation routines

  • Explore creative outlets like art, music, or journaling

And don’t forget about your own self-care. Taking time to recharge as a parent sets the tone for a calm and connected summer for the whole family.

More tips on Practicing Self-Care in the Summertime

⏰ 2. Keep a Light Routine

Kids thrive with predictability—even during summer break. Routines don’t need to be rigid, but a simple structure can help prevent boredom and big emotions. You might include:

  • Morning routines (wake-up, breakfast, getting dressed)

  • Quiet times or “independent play” blocks

  • Chores and responsibilities

📚 3. Prevent the Summer Slide

It’s natural for kids to forget some academic skills over the summer—but there are easy ways to keep learning fun and pressure-free:

  • Set aside 15–20 minutes a day for reading together

  • Let them write postcards, shopping lists, or keep a summer journal

  • Try math in real life—like measuring ingredients or counting change

  • Use free educational apps or workbooks that feel like games

These little moments can go a long way in keeping brains engaged and confident for the fall.

Tips & Activities for Preventing the Summer Slide

💛 Wishing your family a joyful, restorative, and balanced summer!

A note from Annie:

To my K-4 families - Being your counselor this year has truly been a gift to me in ways I can’t adequately describe. Evergreen is such a special place; every day I come to work and am reminded how important it is to have a soft, safe, and nurturing place to land, where we all work together to help each other and grow into the best version of ourselves. I hope our elementary students have learned as much from me as I have from them this year! It is an honor to walk alongside your children and be a part of their stories, helping them grow, learn, and discover themselves and the world around them. I am looking ahead with hope and excitement for when we all get to come together again in August!

A note from Hunter:

To all my 5-8 families - I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude for the past two years I’ve spent at Evergreen. It has been an absolute privilege to support and grow alongside your incredible children during such formative years. While I will not be returning next year, please know this decision was not made lightly. I leave with deep appreciation for the trust you've placed in me and the many meaningful connections we've built together. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your children's journey—it's an experience I will always carry with me.

Evergreen's School Garden:  Growing into 2026

Our school garden is in a time of transition, and it is time for a collaboration of the next generation of school families!  The garden is a lovely space that is in need of helping hands as we approach the 2025-2026 school year.

Volunteering with the school garden will often involve physical labor. These personal interests are a plus:

  • digging,

  • raking,

  • harvesting,

  • planting

  • and weeding while chatting with a fellow volunteer friend

  • Picking up gardening supplies

  • Attending a group work day

  • Light carpentry and repairs

  • Volunteering in the garden with classrooms

  • ALSO- there are many tasks that need to be completed for the garden that don't involve ANYTHING mentioned above!  Do you want to help but prefer other ways?  Volunteer schedule coordination, sourcing supplies, seeking out collaborations within the community and grant writing are all big needs of the garden.

If you would like to join the handful of parents that have started this conversation and become a part of the next iteration of the Evergreen School Garden, please reach out to Evergreen part time staffer and parent, Melanie Corl.
