Robin’s Nest - Here for YOU!

We’ve noticed a lot of kids arriving without coats on these bitterly cold mornings. We wanted to remind our community that we have coats available in the Robin’s Nest that are there, FREE for the taking, if you need them.

We know that many of these students HAVE coats and just refuse to wear them. But if it strengthens your argument: We DO try to get the kids outside every day- even when it is cold or sprinkling. They should really bring appropriate winter gear for class time/recess time OUTSIDE.

Next Week is Holiday Spirit Week

Student Council has put together a fun Spirit Week full of Holiday Spirit! They’ve done a great job of making sure the themes are not so elaborate that it will add to holiday stress- so students can just have some fun with it!

Monday - Blue & White Day
Tuesday- Holiday/Ugly Sweater Day
Wednesday - Holiday Hat Day
Thursday- Dress like a Candy Cane Day
Friday- Pajama Day

Festive Happenings

Save the Date for
the Winter Program

Join us for seasonal cheer as we cheer on our K-4th Grade classes who will be performing on Thursday, December 18th. The show will start at 1:30pm, so arrive with plenty of time to park and walk up if needed!

Winter Market - December 19th

Each year Fifth Graders create a Winter Market as part of their year long exploration of their “Classroom Economy”.

To speak to their recent expedition: Voices of Sustainability - Reusing Plastic, 5th Graders are creating small gift items with a focus on reusing/reimagining plastic pieces into something useful or creative.

Grade levels take turns visiting the 5th Grade classroom and have an opportunity to buy something for themselves or to give as a gift. Mint tea with mint from the garden and healthy baked goods will also be available.

Each item is one dollar and students can get one craft, one treat, and one cup of tea. It's a beautiful tradition and a rare time for us to connect throughout the day.

Proceeds from the Winter Market are used to offset the cost of the fifth grade End of Year camping trip to Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest in addition to making charitable donations to our community nonprofit partners.

The Wisdom of Winter: Rest & Renewal

When the long, dark days of winter set in, nature instinctively slows down. Animals burrow underground for months-long hibernation, trees and plants grow still, and daylight fades earlier each day. Yet, this natural rhythm often contrasts sharply with the busy, bright, and boisterous holiday season our culture encourages. It’s no wonder that finding balance can feel challenging.

Research consistently shows that intentional downtime helps children regulate emotions, strengthen memory, and boost cognitive function. In fact, moments of rest and unstructured quiet time can offer several powerful benefits:

  1. Reduced stress levels – While small amounts of stress are normal, too much can impact a child’s physical and mental well-being. Setting aside time for rest over the holidays can ease anxiety and promote a greater sense of calm.

  2. Improved sleep quality – When kids are overstimulated or juggling too many activities, it becomes harder for their bodies and minds to wind down. Building small moments of relaxation into daily routines can support healthier sleep and leave children feeling more energized.

  3. Enhanced creativity and imagination – Children’s brains are constantly taking in information, but creativity flourishes when there’s space for daydreaming and unstructured thought. Rest provides that valuable breathing room, allowing imagination to take the lead.

If you’re wondering how to honor our natural pull toward rest while still navigating the excitement of the season, the links below offer helpful tips for finding balance and managing holiday stress:

Children’s Grief Awareness

November 17th was Children’s Grief Awareness Day on which people and organizations around the world aim to raise awareness about how grief impacts children and how we can support their healing and wellness following the experience of loss.

According to the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model an estimated 6.4 million children in the United States will be bereaved by the age of 18. Research shows that unaddressed childhood grief can lead to both short- and long-term challenges, including higher risk for disrupted development, trauma, low academic performance, mental health issues, and early mortality. Additionally, bereaved youth are 175% more likely to develop a substance use disorder in adulthood. And no, unfortunately that is not a typo.

Many societies hold rigid ideas about how grief “should” look and how long it should last, often expecting people to move on in a predictable, linear timeline. These constructs show up across cultures, but they tend to oversimplify a process that is deeply individual, non-linear, and shaped by personal history and context. There is no “getting over” or “completing” the grief process. It simply changes over time.

Grief is different for everyone, and children may express grief differently from adults. Young children in particular may not have the ability to fully understand the concept of death and its finality, making symptoms harder to catch. Kids need advocates in their corner who understand the grief process and can offer safe, compassionate spaces where they feel seen, heard, and supported.

If your child/family experiences a loss and you’d like to discuss options for supporting your child/family, feel free to reach out to your school counselors: Annie (K-4) and Rachel (5-8) and we will be happy to guide you through those important next steps. There is no going around grief, we all have to go through it. The most important thing to remember is that no one has to go through it alone. 🧡

World Kindness Day

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.
— Aesop

World Kindness Day is an international celebration held each year on November 13 to promote kindness and goodwill around the world. It was established by the World Kindness Movement in 1998 to encourage people everywhere to be kind to one another through random acts of kindness, volunteering, and positive social connections.

This day is a wonderful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference! Whether it’s offering a smile, sharing a compliment, or helping a friend in need, every kind action helps our school community feel more connected and cared for.

This week, we invite all students and staff to look for opportunities to show kindness- in the classroom, at recess, and even at home. You might:

  • Write a kind note to a classmate or teacher

  • Invite someone new to join a game

  • Say “thank you” to a staff member who helps you every day

  • Lend a hand when someone needs it

Check out this resource for more ideas!

Families can continue the kindness conversation by asking children how they’ve shown kindness at school and who has been kind to them. Talking about real examples helps kids recognize the power of kind words and actions in their everyday lives, and reminds them that kindness starts with each of us.

Counselors’ Challenge: Try to do three acts of kindness this week and notice how it makes you and others feel!

💛 Happy World Kindness Day from your school counselors!

This year, more than ever, We really Need every penny.

Here are some simple things we can do as a collective that can make a big difference. The more participation we get in these programs, the greater the rewards for our school!

Please spend the time to link your grocery rewards cards to Evergreen. Get your neighbors to do the same. Register your in-laws, your parents, your friends. This small investment of time can make a big difference each time you go to the store to restock!

Register your Harris Teeter Card here. You must re-register each and every year.

Register your Ingles Card here. You must re-register each and every year.
Our school id number is 10713.

Download the Box Tops for Education App and scan your receipts.

Cans for Climbing
Bring your aluminum cans for recycling, drop them in the trailer that sits by the buses. Cans for Climbing supports our Adventure Program and brings in over a thousand dollars each year!
