Grandfriends’ Day - February 13th @ 9am

The invitations have gone out! Want to make sure your folks were on the list? Please drop their info on this form.

Grandfriends Day is going to be a little different this year because we’re moving it a bit earlier in the day. The event will run from 9am-11am. This is important because it means that if your Grandfriend takes your child home/out after the event it is too early in the day to count toward attendance, and they would be marked absent for the day. Please encourage your Grandfriend to come- but to leave students to complete their school day!

Send some love to your favorite Evergreeners!
https://givebutter.com/evergreenlove

Know your loved ones won’t be able to make it? They can still send their love on the day by participating in our sliding-scale Spread The Love Fundraiser!

We hope to have a great turnout this year! So help us spread the word to Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, Chosen Family, Beloved Neighbors, or Friends! All are welcome to spend the day with their favorite Evergreener/s!

Screen Time & The Brain

Screens are woven into nearly every part of our daily lives. They help us learn, connect, work, and relax. But as screen use has increased, we’re learning more about how it affects the developing brain, and the findings invite us to pause and reflect on our relationship with screens.

New Research (5-min. video) is showing that excessive or unbalanced screen time can impact areas of the brain responsible for attention, emotional regulation, impulse control, and executive functioning. For young brains that are still developing, frequent screen stimulation has been shown to weaken reading, language/communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills, social understanding, and stress tolerance.

Many children (and adults) find themselves caught in a familiar “screen cycle” (shown in the attached infographic), in which screens provide quick relief from boredom or discomfort, but repeated reliance on them can lead to increased dysregulation, irritability, and difficulty engaging without the aid of constant stimulation. More about this cycle and its effects can be found here.

The encouraging news is that the brain is highly adaptable–especially young brains! Creating healthier screen habits can support physical, cognitive, and emotional growth and healing. The American Academy of Pediatrics provides a wealth of information and linked resources to help guide parents in implementing healthier screen time practices at home. When considering what this could look like for your family, keep in mind that the goal is not to eliminate screens altogether. That’s neither realistic nor helpful in a world where technology is here to stay. Instead, the focus should be on intentional, developmentally appropriate, and balanced use—in short, we need to teach children how to use screens as tools, not coping mechanisms

We may be at a critical moment—both culturally and societally—where we need to get honest about how screens are shaping and influencing how kids experience and understand the world. And…it’s not just about the children. Kids learn far more from what we model than what we say. If we want our children to develop healthier relationships with screens, we have to be willing to reflect on our own habits too—how often we’re distracted, how present we are, and how we use technology to cope with stress or avoid discomfort.

Creating healthier screen use habits is not about guilt or perfection, it’s about awareness, intention, and small sustainable shifts. When family members can all work toward this goal together, we create space for deeper connection, stronger skills, and healthier brains for everyone.

The Power of Service

As we reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we are reminded that service is one of the most powerful ways to make a difference. It’s important our children understand that it doesn’t have to be a grand gesture and can be simple, everyday actions like listening without interrupting, including someone who feels left out, helping a classmate, or writing a kind note.

These small but meaningful acts help students build empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility. When students practice noticing how others feel, responding with kindness, and following through on commitments, they are strengthening key social-emotional skills such as social awareness and relationship skills. Service encourages students to move beyond individual concerns and begin thinking about how their actions impact the people and world around them.

We encourage students to look for everyday opportunities to serve. Tangible ways students practice empathy and compassion at school include:

  • Checking in with a peer who seems upset or overwhelmed

  • Inviting someone new to sit with them at lunch or join a group activity

  • Helping keep shared spaces clean and organized

  • Writing thank-you notes to staff members or community helpers

  • Being patient and respectful when others make mistakes

Families can also support social-emotional learning by modeling service and having intentional conversations at home. Conversation starters for families:

  • What does it mean to show empathy, even when we don’t agree?

  • How can our actions make someone else’s day easier or better?

  • “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” What does service look like for kids and families?

Get Involved!

If you and your family are looking for ways to get involved in our local community this MLK Jr. Day, check out the following local events and volunteer opportunities:

By practicing service in small, tangible ways, students learn that the time is always right to do what is right. Together, we can help our students grow into compassionate, responsible, and caring members of their school and community.

January 2026

Happy New Year, Evergreen!

It’s great to have everyone back at school! The halls are full of enthusiastic noise and students are settling back in.

Construction updates:

You may have noticed signage and a new construction area near the gym. Site prep is underway for the new kitchen building! Please pay attention to construction signage and barriers and avoid that area.

Unfortunately, this means parking in the upper lot is even more limited than before. If you are walking up to the double doors to get your child at dismissal, we encourage you to park in the lower lot so that our EverAfter staff can find parking in the upper lot.

Measles, flu, pertussis, chicken pox, stomach bugs - yikes:

There are outbreaks of chicken pox and pertussis in the area; here at Evergreen we seem to have had plenty of flu and stomach bug cases, but thankfully nothing else yet.

But serious talk, everyone - there are measles cases in Buncombe county. Because it is so serious and highly contagious, just one case is considered an outbreak. Something important for families to be aware of is that if a child is exposed and doesn’t have proof of immunity (through vaccines, lab evidence of immunity, or confirmation of measles), they will have to be quarantined for 21 days.

Early signs of measles are a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Because measles is so contagious, any student who shared a space with the confirmed case during the infectious period (4 days before and after rash onset) will be considered a contact and need to prove immunity or quarantine. Please check in with your healthcare provider or the health department if you have questions.

Let’s work together to keep everyone as healthy as possible - wash hands well, wear masks as needed, and if your child isn’t feeling well, please keep them home and check in with their doctor, our school nurse, or the health department. We all need to do whatever we can in order to protect those who are more vulnerable in our community!

Enrollment updates:

Enrollment season has begun, and we need your help to recruit middle school students and fill seats in the upper grades. Each open space we have decreases our revenue by thousands of dollars, and we need every dollar possible in order to maintain current staffing levels and program offerings. Please share and help us fill seats!

Stay healthy and enjoy your January!

Robin’s Nest - Here for YOU!

We’ve noticed a lot of kids arriving without coats on these bitterly cold mornings. We wanted to remind our community that we have coats available in the Robin’s Nest that are there, FREE for the taking, if you need them.

We know that many of these students HAVE coats and just refuse to wear them. But if it strengthens your argument: We DO try to get the kids outside every day- even when it is cold or sprinkling. They should really bring appropriate winter gear for class time/recess time OUTSIDE.

Winter Market - December 19th

Each year Fifth Graders create a Winter Market as part of their year long exploration of their “Classroom Economy”.

To speak to their recent expedition: Voices of Sustainability - Reusing Plastic, 5th Graders are creating small gift items with a focus on reusing/reimagining plastic pieces into something useful or creative.

Grade levels take turns visiting the 5th Grade classroom and have an opportunity to buy something for themselves or to give as a gift. Mint tea with mint from the garden and healthy baked goods will also be available.

Each item is one dollar and students can get one craft, one treat, and one cup of tea. It's a beautiful tradition and a rare time for us to connect throughout the day.

Proceeds from the Winter Market are used to offset the cost of the fifth grade End of Year camping trip to Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest in addition to making charitable donations to our community nonprofit partners.

Gratitude

As we make our way through these final days before Winter Break it feels like the time to make our annual plug about the power of Gratitude. Please accept this week’s Counseling Corner as an invitation to pause and appreciate the good things in our lives, and notice the things that we too often take for granted. The beautiful thing about gratitude is that it doesn’t just feel good in our hearts, but it’s actually good for our bodies, mind, and overall well being.

Research has shown that people who express gratitude are happier, less stressed, and less depressed. Expressing gratitude releases oxytocin (also called the “love hormone”), a hormone that helps us feel a connection to others. Feelings of gratitude encourage a positive outlook, more creative thinking, increased mental productivity, and can even contribute to a wider attention span. Additionally, gratitude activates multiple brain regions including the brain’s reward pathways and the hypothalamus. It can actually boost the neurotransmitter serotonin and signal the brain stem to produce dopamine - our brain’s pleasure chemical. This means that the more space we create for feeling grateful in our lives, the healthier and happier we can feel!

Here are a few ideas of ways you and your family can stay grounded in gratitude during the holidays:

  1. Be mindful of the focus - Consider a “Wishing AND Giving List” – two columns, one for “giving,” one for “wishing.” Challenge the kids to make the lists even!

  2. Slow down the gift opening - taking turns opening gifts one by one holds space for gifts to be truly appreciated, and for the recipient to express gratitude.

  3. Create seasonal experiences in addition to the gift exchange - watching a movie as a family, baking or cooking together, going to look at lights, etc. will create meaningful memories that can’t be found inside a giftbox.

  4. Consider giving experiential gifts over toys or “stuff”- Tickets to a play/museum, a camping trip, an afternoon at the trampoline park, or acts of service...experiential gifts build relationships instead of materialism.

  5. Practice what you preach - Children learn through observation and experience. When we are intentional about making space for gratitude we instill the value of maintaining a healthy balance between gratification and gratitude in our children.
