Evergreen Annual Fund

Thank you to everyone who has given to Tourney of the Hoops and the Evergreen Fund. Your support of our school and public education makes a real impact.

Did you know: 80% of Evergreen's annual budget is used for teacher and staff salaries? Meaning your dollars go to what matters most: having invested, qualified professionals in classrooms.

If you haven't given yet, there is still time! Your donation is so important, now more than ever!

A small monthly gift of $5 per month, or a quarterly or one time donation can have a big difference on our school's budget at a time when we are facing massive budget cuts.
We appreciate you being part of our Evergreen community.

"Patience is something you admire in the driver behind you
and scorn in the one ahead."

It’s no surprise that traffic is up on Haw Creek. This is especially problematic on our busiest traffic day, Monday. Please be courteous to staff and other parents during traffic. It is frustrating right now AND we cannot change it. We ask for your understanding that staff are doing their best to make traffic as smooth as possible for everyone - we appreciate your patience.
Feel yourself getting heated? Please take a breath and lead with grace.

  • Lower Lot: Please be courteous to each other while navigating entry and exit to and from the lower lot. Yelling at each other does not help the situation.

  • On Mondays - If you want to be on the driveway and not have to wait in the looping lot, you should plan to arrive by 1:15pm

  • Arriving after the drive is full? Enter the looping lot as directed by staff or the lower lot if you are walking up to the school or picking up a 6th-8th grader that has permission to walk down.

  • After Pick up, when you are exiting the drive way, watch for cars waiting to enter the lower lot and let them in - otherwise it causes traffic to back up onto Haw Creek Rd. Our goal in orchestrating looping lot holding, and lower lot pick ups, is to keep traffic off of Haw Creek Rd.

Rooted in Wellness: How Nature Supports Whole-Person Health

As Spring is springing and the weather is warming up, it’s the perfect time to remember the many benefits of getting outside. Research consistently shows that spending time in nature isn’t just enjoyable—it’s good for our health in multiple ways!

🌿 Physical Benefits: Time in green spaces naturally encourages movement—walking, running, climbing, or just exploring—which supports overall fitness and motor development. It can also help improve sleep quality and reduce inflammation. Even a short walk outdoors has been shown to lower blood pressure and decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

🌿 Emotional Benefits: Nature has a calming effect on our nervous systems. Being outdoors can reduce feelings of anxiety, sadness, and anger, while boosting mood and emotional resilience. In children, regular outdoor time is associated with improved emotional regulation and fewer signs of stress or irritability. Green spaces act as a buffer for mental health—especially important during times of stress.

🌿 Cognitive Benefits: Time in nature has been shown to restore attention and improve executive functioning skills like working memory and impulse control. This is particularly valuable for students who struggle with focus or who feel overwhelmed in structured indoor settings. Just 20 minutes in a natural environment can significantly enhance concentration.

🌿 Specific Benefits for Students: For school-age children, regular contact with nature is linked to better academic outcomes, improved social-emotional learning, and stronger peer relationships. Nature play fosters creativity, problem-solving, and resilience—key qualities that help students thrive in and out of the classroom. Teachers even report fewer behavioral issues and more engaged learning after outdoor time. A growing number of schools around the world are integrating outdoor learning for these very reasons.

As we embrace the beauty and restoration of Springtime, consider making nature part of your family’s weekly rhythm—whether it's a neighborhood walk, a weekend hike, or even reading a book under a tree. It’s a simple, free, and powerful way to support your child’s physical health, mental clarity, and emotional growth.

fostering emotional intelligence

Welcome back from spring break! As we transition into our routines, it’s an ideal time to reflect on how we can support our children's emotional growth.

Lael Stone's TEDx talk, How to Raise Emotionally Intelligent Children, offers insightful guidance on fostering emotional intelligence (EQ) in our kids. It is definitely worth a watch, but if you are strapped for time, here is a breakdown of how to support emotional intelligence in our children.

Children cannot be what they cannot see.
— Lael Stone

Validate Their Emotions

Children often experience intense feelings that may seem disproportionate to adults. Instead of dismissing these emotions, it's crucial to acknowledge them. Stone emphasizes the importance of allowing children to express their feelings without immediately trying to fix them. This approach helps children feel heard and understood, laying the foundation for emotional resilience.

Model Emotional Expression

Children learn by observing the adults around them. If we want our children to be emotionally intelligent, we need to model healthy emotional expressions. This means being open about our own feelings and showing them how to manage emotions in a positive way. For example, if you're feeling stressed, you might say, 'I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed right now, so I'm going to take a few deep breaths to calm down.'

Create a Safe Emotional Space

It's essential for parents to create a safe and accepting environment where children feel comfortable expressing their emotions. Validating and acknowledging their feelings without judgment or dismissal helps children develop emotional awareness and understanding. For instance, instead of saying, "Don't be sad," try saying, "I understand you're feeling sad. It's okay to feel that way."

Encourage Empathy and Compassion

Children learn empathy and compassion by observing and experiencing it themselves. Stone suggests supporting parents with tools and understanding to listen compassionately to their children. Encouraging boys to express vulnerability and girls to find their voice fosters an environment where empathy thrives.

Understand the 'Why' Behind Behavior

Instead of focusing solely on behavior, it's important to understand the underlying emotions driving it. Stone advocates for compassionate listening and loving limits, emphasizing that there's always a reason behind a child's behavior. This perspective helps in addressing the root causes of emotional distress.

Foster Emotional Literacy in Education

Stone highlights the significance of emotional literacy in our culture, noting that the lack of it contributes to increasing rates of psychological distress in adults. Teaching emotional literacy, empathy, and compassion is essential in both parenting and education to address this issue.

Hello Evergreen Families,

Did you know that North Carolina is now 41st in the nation for average teacher pay and 42nd in starting pay? Every state surrounding NC pays a higher average and starting salary for teachers.

Even worse, NC is 47th in the country for education funding. Schools spend much less per pupil and relative to taxpayer income than most other states.

The NC General Assembly is currently creating the next biennial budget and considering other legislation (see below) and needs to hear what matters to you.

Three bills, among other pending legislation, warrants your attention. For more information, please visit the websites provided below:

  • NC House Bill 595 would prevent instruction on gender identity, sexual activity, or sexuality from being included in curriculum provided in kindergarten through sixth grade.

  • NC Senate Bill 227 would eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”) in Public Education

  • Federal HR 2456 calls for Orderly Liquidation of the Department of Education Act “To terminate the Department of Education, and for other purposes”.

On the topic of budget, it is important for Evergreen families to be aware that, following the passage of House Bill 10 last fall, significantly more taxpayer dollars are reallocated from public education to private education via Opportunity Scholarships. The North Carolina General Assembly allocated $463 million for Opportunity Scholarships in 2025. These scholarships are no longer subject to income caps and go to private schools that have discretion to refuse admission to any student they choose, including those with learning differences, special needs, and behavioral challenges. As well, private schools are not accountable for state curriculum standards or assessments.

Senate Bill 406 (2023-2024 Session) - North Carolina General Assembly

NCSEAA K12 Scholarships

We urge Evergreen parents and community members to contact your local lawmakers to urge them to support public education funding including teacher pay and tell them how you feel about these proposed bills and current law.

To determine who your lawmakers are, and how to reach them, enter your home address into 5 Calls (5calls.org)

Our Evergreen Legislative Committee (a board committee) meets regularly to stay abreast of rapidly changing State and Federal legislation that affects our school, funding, and community. For more information, or if you are interested in joining the Legislative Committee, please contact me. I’d love to be sure that our legislators hear our voices as they make decisions!

child care info - Conference Day

For Friday morning, the 11th, we will host drop-in care in the gym.

It'll take you a few minutes to do that; please plan accordingly so that you are not late to your conference time--your child's teachers' time is both valuable AND limited!

We also ask that if you prefer not to use EverAfter, please keep your children with you, or just outside of whatever classroom you are conferencing in. Unsupervised kids will be sent back to their parents or to the main office. Thanks for keeping kids supervised and safe!

Additionally, if you need all day care for your child on the 11th, and you are registered for EverAfter, please refer to information in the EverAfter Newsletter dated 4/3. For questions, please reach out to EverAfter Director James Wilson.

Please RSVP, volunteer options available in the RSVP form.
Please share this event with alumni, or other community members that you feel may not see it otherwise.

The following excerpt is from a picture book called, Maybe, which is available in the school library. It inspired the centerpiece of Dr. Susan’s final graduation address. In the end, she was not able to deliver the speech herself, and it was given by Jen in her stead. It feels fitting to offer these words up again at this time, when it feels like we could all use just a little more encouragement.

This world needs your gifts, your talents, your big ideas.
And maybe you are just getting started.
What if you are only scratching the surface of what you can do and who you can be?
What if you have talents you haven’t discovered yet?
There is something powerful, even magical, about you.
You already have everything it takes to do big things.
Maybe you have no idea just how good you really can be?
And maybe you don’t know how much you matter?
But maybe, just maybe, the world has been waiting centuries for someone exactly like you.
One thing is for sure, you are here.
And because you are here...
...anything is possible.
— Kobi Yamada

Dr. Susan went on to write, “Hold onto your integrity, hold onto each other, and hold onto your dreams.”
We hope to see you May 3rd with your all dreams and your dreamers.

If you need child care during conferences on the 10th or 11th, you may bring them to EverAfter. This is free of charge! Due to conferences being split between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, one being during regular after school time and one during an all day care day, we have two different plans, so please read carefully:

  • For Thursday afternoon, the 10th, we will host drop-in care on the lower playground and Multipurpose room from 3:55-8:00 (SEE ATTACHED MAP!)

  • For Friday morning, the 11th, we will host drop-in care in the gym.

The beginning of EverAfter is a busy time and if students are not signed out by their caregiver with EverAfter Staff it is very hard to get an accurate count of how many children we are caring for, resulting in staff searching for ‘lost’ children, causing stress and inefficiency.

The Power of the Pause: Helping Kids Build Impulse Control

Impulse control is a crucial skill that helps children and teens make thoughtful decisions, manage emotions, and build strong relationships. Research shows that children with strong impulse control tend to perform better academically, have fewer behavioral challenges, and experience greater long-term success. In fact, the famous "Marshmallow Test" by psychologist Walter Mischel found that children who delayed gratification were more likely to have higher SAT scores, better stress management, and healthier social relationships later in life.

Since impulse control is a developing skill throughout childhood and adolescence, parents play a key role in strengthening it at home. Here are some simple, practical strategies to help:

🛑 Model the "Pause and Think" Strategy: Before reacting to a frustrating situation, verbalize your thought process: “I really want to interrupt right now, but I’m going to take a deep breath and wait.”

🎲 Use Games to Make Self-Control Fun: Activities like Simon Says, Red Light, Green Light, or even board games requiring turn-taking help children practice patience and delayed gratification.

📆 Create Predictable Routines: When kids know what to expect, they are less likely to act impulsively. Structured routines help them learn self-regulation skills.

🗣️ Encourage Self-Talk: Teach children to use phrases like “Is this a big deal or a small deal?” or “What might happen if I do this?” before making a decision.

🌟 Praise Effort, Not Just Outcomes: When children successfully manage their impulses, acknowledge their effort: “I noticed you stopped and thought before grabbing that toy—great job thinking first!”

Developing impulse control is a gradual process, but with consistent practice, children can learn to manage their impulses effectively—setting them up for lifelong success.
