Following Up: Doomscrolling & Its Impact on Families

Last week, we talked about how children are impacted by media exposure and how to navigate tough conversations. This week, we’re taking a closer look at something many adults (and increasingly, kids) experience: “doomscrolling.”

Doomscrolling often begins with good intentions, wanting to understand what’s happening in the world so we can feel informed and prepared. This pull toward information is very human! At the same time, constant access to news and social media can make it easy to get stuck in a cycle of negative content, leaving us feeling overwhelmed or anxious.

Mental health experts note that doomscrolling can contribute to increased anxiety, disrupted sleep, difficulty focusing, and heightened stress for both adults and children. Even when kids aren’t directly engaging with the content, they are often picking up on what we see, hear, and feel.

The good news is that small changes can make a big difference. As caregivers, one of the most powerful tools we have is modeling healthy habits.

Here are some ways to create a healthier balance at home:

  • Lead by example: Children notice our habits. Setting boundaries around your own screen time and engaging in offline activities sends a powerful message.

  • Set digital boundaries: Use screen-time limits or built-in tools to create natural stopping points. Encourage regular breaks to help the mind rest and reset.

  • Create tech-free times: Consider screen-free moments during meals or before bedtime. Keeping devices out of reach at night can support better sleep for everyone.

  • Try the 80/20 rule: Aim for most screen time (about 80%) to be educational, creative, or enriching, with the remaining time for entertainment.

  • Balance the content: Balance heavier news with more positive or neutral content (“joyscrolling”).

  • Rediscover offline activities: Encourage hobbies that don’t involve screens, such as spending time outdoors, reading, creating art, or playing music. These experiences help build creativity and resilience.

By being intentional about our media habits, we not only support our own well-being but also create a calmer, more reassuring environment for our children.

Navigating Tough Conversations: Children and the Media

Did you know that children are often more observant than adults? While adults tend to focus their attention on one task at a time, children often notice many things happening around them. This means that even something as routine as scrolling on your phone or having the news on in the background can catch a child’s attention.

In today’s digital world, children are exposed to more media than ever before. News about local and global conflicts or other troubling events can appear in headlines, conversations, or videos that children may see or overhear. Even when exposure is unintentional, these stories can bring up big feelings for kids, including fear, confusion, sadness, or worry. While adults may be better able to process difficult news, children’s developing brains often struggle to make sense of upsetting events. As a result, they may need extra reassurance, conversation, and support from the adults around them.

How to Support Your Child

Many families find themselves navigating difficult questions about these topics. Here are a few gentle ways to approach these conversations:

Start by listening. A simple way to begin is by asking, “What have you heard about this?” This helps you understand what your child already knows and creates a safe space for them to share their thoughts and questions.

Keep it simple. Offer clear, age-appropriate information. You don’t need to have all the answers. Often, what children need most is your calm presence and reassurance.

Focus on feelings. Instead of trying to explain every detail of why something is happening, it can be more helpful to focus on how your child is feeling. Let them know their feelings are valid and that you are there to support them.

Offer reassurance. These conversations will naturally grow and change as your child gets older. Simply talking together and reminding your child that they are safe and cared for can go a long way in helping them feel secure.

Keeping the conversation open and supportive helps children make sense of the world around them in a healthy and manageable way.

March 5th - Director's Letter

Happy March! I hope you are all having a good break and enjoying some spring-like weather.

Executive Director Search Process

I’m sure many of you are curious about the process for finding Evergreen’s next Executive Director. I’m sending on an update from Ashley, our Board Chair, with an overview of how the process:

My name is Ashley Shores-Bobowski and I have the opportunity to serve as the Evergreen board chair. I want to provide a few updates as we embark on the important work of hiring a new ED for Evergreen.

Here is the process timeline from the ED job description:
Application period: February 4 - March 8, 2026
Interviews scheduled: March 16- April 13, 2026
Anticipated date of offer: May 1, 2026 (dates subject to change as the search team works through the process)

We are grateful for the community members who have committed to being on our ED search committee. We sought to keep the committee to a manageable size while ensuring that we had a strong balance of representation from all stakeholders. Please thank these folks for offering their time:

Ashley Shores-Bobowski: Board Chair,
Beth Rankin: Business Manager,
Marni Silverberg: Middle School Teacher and Parent,
Heather Tate: Elementary Teacher,
Emily Wright-Moore: Board Member & Parent,
Nichole Onash: Former Board Member & Parent,
SJ Smith: 5-8 Associate Director & Parent

We are grateful for the large number of parents and community members who took time to complete the ED search survey. That information will deeply inform the process and next steps. During final interviews, we will also have an opportunity for parent and community members to submit questions and provide input.

In partnership,
Ashley + Evergreen Board

Spring Fundraiser:
Tourney of the Hoops

Tourney of the Hoops is coming up fast and is a super important fundraiser for the school! We know we ask parents to give often - this is a great opportunity to encourage your kids to expand their reach and ask neighbors, extended family members, and friends to support our active, fun, competitive and collaborative spring fundraiser. Each grade level has a goal and incentives to meet their goals. Find out more on the Tourney of the Hoops Giving Page!

Unlike many school’s fundraisers, all funds go directly to Evergreen and are used to support the school’s operating goals.

School hours makeup

After the most recent delays, we’ll need to make up 3.75 hours of school (barring other delays or closings). The admin team is seeking staff input and will create a plan for these makeups and announce the options as soon as possible!

Kitchen Construction update

The footers have been poured and we are awaiting a building delivery date, but you can expect to see the kitchen building in place by mid-April!

Incentives

Part of the reason we took over the Spring Fundraiser from the All Inclusive Fundraising Corporate Outfits, is because our students pointed out that those kinds of events actually generate a lot of waste. We had to concede, they were right, it did not really match with the Evergreen ethos.

So we shifted to experience based incentives that promote FUN over ‘stuff’. Because the last thing any of us needs is more plastic tchotchke!

We also award incentives based on the number of gifts from different donors, or new donors, or as the week progresses, based on meeting overall goals. We try to focus less on dollar amounts. What matters most is participation!

Student Council helped us come up with this list to ensure the incentives are still kid approved!

Classrooms may choose to sweeten the pot by offering special incentives, this is a room by room or teaching team decision.

TOURNEY FAQS

Q: What is Tourney of the Hoops?
A: It’s a day for students to get together and play a uniquely Evergreen game, Capture the Hoops.

Q: What is Capture the Hoops?
A: The game was invented by former Evergreen Teacher, Chris Weaver and has remained a staple of the third grade experience ever since! At one point we had such a devoted cadre of Capturers that families gathered to play the game at area parks on the weekends!

It became a tradition for Third Grade to play the game on Friday afternoons and remains so to this day.

There have been some evolutions in the rules through the years, but you can think of it like Capture the Flag, but with hoops not flags. There are many hoops, not just one per team, and the game is played in the round across four quadrants with a free space in the center affectionately named Coney Island at some point in recent history.

Q: My student is in Kindergarten/First/Second Grade! They won’t know how to play!

A: Capture The Hoops is a bit much for K-2 Kiddos. We teach them Hoop Based Team Building Games to ensure they also have a fun and safe day that’s not overwhelming!

Integrity

According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, children and adults lie for similar reasons: to get out of trouble, for personal gain, to impress or protect someone, or to be polite. At a young age, kids will experiment with the truth and continue doing so through all the developmental stages, with varying degrees of sophistication and elaboration.

As the primary role models in children's lives, parents and caregivers play a vital part in showcasing honesty. They also have the most influence on instilling a deep-rooted commitment to telling the truth. As children mature and acquire a more sophisticated understanding of social etiquette, parents must help children differentiate between little white lies told to spare people's feelings and downright dishonesty.
