Halloween Parade

Each year Evergreen holds a Halloween Parade! Students wear or bring their costumes (Check classroom newsletters for guidance from your grade level/s!) and a schoolwide parade of costumes is held on the field. Parents are welcome to attend, it’s more fun with an audience!

Friday, October 31st @ 2pm

When selecting a costume please be mindful that we have a variety of ages at the school, costumes must be appropriate for our younger friends. Our standard golden rule of costumes is: “No Blood, No Gore, No Weapons of War.”

We would also like to remind our community that cultural icons are costumes, a depiction of a whole culture based on stereotypes is not. For more watch, “My Culture is not a Costume”.

Costume Swap

Please bring gently used costumes and costume elements to the front office for families to ‘shop’. You do not need to bring an item to ‘shop’ the swap. All items given and taken freely.

LGBTQ+ History Month

October has been a month full of important topics to highlight!

In addition to National Bullying Prevention Month, did you know that it’s also LGBTQ+ History Month?

LGBTQ+ History Month is a month-long celebration first observed in the United States in 1994, thanks to Rodney Wilson, an openly gay high school teacher from Missouri who advocated for dedicating a month to honoring LGBTQ+ history. October was chosen not only for its historical significance- with National Coming Out Day on October 11th and the anniversary of the first March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights in 1979- but also because it’s a time when students are in school and learning together.

At Evergreen, we are continually working toward a school culture that is inclusive, equitable, and supportive of all students- regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, economic status, ability, religious values, or political affiliation. We’re excited to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month and to uplift the voices of students represented in this community.

Bullying Prevention Month, continued

As we mentioned in last week’s Scoop, October is National Bullying Prevention Month. As parents and caregivers, we encourage you to continue having conversations at home about what bullying is (and isn’t), and- perhaps even more importantly- about kindness, inclusion, and standing up for others.

This week, we’re focusing on what it means to be an upstander and how each of us can help create a community where everyone feels safe, seen, and valued.

Be an Upstander, Not a Bystander

Kids have a tremendous impact on their school community. When they know what to do, they’re more prepared to step in and help in safe, age-appropriate ways.

Reading Bystander to Bullying is a great way for older students (and families) to learn how to speak up, show support, and de-escalate tough situations with confidence.

For younger students, keep the message simple: kindness spreads! Including others, offering a helping hand, or sharing an encouraging word helps everyone feel welcome. Even small acts like a smile, an invitation to play, or a kind word can create a ripple effect that inspires others to do the same.

VOLUNTEER

October is National Bullying Prevention Month

This week we're highlighting resources to help parents and students work together to take meaningful action against bullying.

Bullying is defined as an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through unwanted verbal, physical and/or social behavior that causes physical and/or psychological harm. In order to be labeled as bullying, three criteria must be met:

  1. The actions are repeated over time, despite being asked or told to stop.

  2. The acts are deliberate with an intention to cause hurt, harm, or humiliation.

  3. An imbalance of power (physical, status, knowledge, etc.) exists between the aggressor and the targeted individual or group.

As parents and caregivers, one of the most important steps we can take is to educate ourselves—staying informed about current definitions, warning signs, and potential risks ensures we understand what bullying truly is (and what it isn’t). Using accurate, thoughtful language when talking about social behaviors and peer relationships helps create a space for open, honest conversations. With shared understanding and awareness, young people can strengthen their skills and confidence to recognize bullying, respond appropriately, and show resilience—while also playing a key role in fostering a positive, inclusive, and bully-free environment at school, in their community, and throughout their lives.

Restraint Collapse

We hope you all had a fun and restorative Fall Break. This week we are talking about the phenomenon known as After-School Restraint Collapse, a natural emotional release that can happen when kids arrive home after a long day of exerting mental, emotional, and physical effort to hold it together at school. If you are a parent who has noticed that their child or teen seems to “fall apart” after school—meltdowns, irritability, withdrawal, or emotional outbursts that seem to come out of nowhere—this post is for you!

What looks like a tantrum, defiance, or an overreaction to us is actually the body and brain’s way of decompressing after working hard to meet expectations all day long. Click the link above for a deeper look at why this happens and what it can look like in both children and teens, as well as practical strategies and considerations for supporting them through it. Additionally, understanding the difference between tantrums and meltdowns is useful insight to gain, particularly for parents of neurodivergent and/or sensory sensitive children. If listening is more your jam or you’d like to hear more from the experts, we highly recommend this helpful podcast from the Institute of Child Psychology: “Navigating After School Restraint Collapse, which offers additional insight and actionable tips for helping kids feel safe, secure, and supported as they unwind from the demands of the school day.

Please spend the time to link your grocery rewards cards to Evergreen. Get your neighbors to do the same. Register your in-laws, your parents, your friends. This small investment of time can make a big difference each time you go to the store to restock!

Register your Harris Teeter Card here. You must re-register each and every year.

Register your Ingles Card here. You must re-register each and every year.
Our school id number is 10713.

Download the Box Tops for Education App and scan your receipts.
