Mental Health awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s a perfect time to pause and reflect on how we support the emotional well-being of ourselves and our children. Just like physical health, our mental health needs regular care, attention, open conversation, and sometimes, guidance from a professional.

This week, we are sharing several infographics that highlight key mental health facts, warning signs, and ways to nurture strong mental wellness in our kids. You’ll also find tips for reducing stigma and understanding the many factors that shape a child’s mental health.

In addition to those resources, here are a few important reminders:

  • Mental health isn’t just about diagnoses — It shows up in how kids handle stress, connect with others, and bounce back from challenges. Sometimes small changes in behavior, sleep, or mood can be early indicators that a child may need some extra support. Additionally, some modern therapy approaches are moving away from pathologizing and leaning into more holistic/strengths-based approaches that aim to honor each individual human experience and highlight one’s capacity for self-acceptance, self-compassion, and personal growth.

  • Parents and caregivers play a powerful role — When adults model healthy coping, emotional intelligence, and self-care, kids learn these same habits. Taking care of your own mental health benefits you, your child(ren), and your family as a whole. I read one time that the greatest gift we can give our children is to heal ourselves, and that has really stuck with me! It’s important to remember that we cannot pour from an empty cup, so prioritizing our own mental and emotional well-being is THE first step to helping our children do the same.

  • Not every hard moment is a crisis — but connection matters. Ups and downs are a normal part of growing up and all kids have tough days. What’s most important is that kids know their feelings are valid and that there’s a trusted adult they can talk to. Experiencing strong emotions does not always mean something bigger is going on, but it’s important to keep communication open so we can spot mood/behavior shifts and warning signs more easily.

  • When in doubt, reach out — If you’re ever unsure about what you’re noticing in your child, or even if you just want support, don’t hesitate to connect with your school counselor, pediatrician, or a mental health professional. You don’t have to wait for things to be “serious” to ask questions or seek guidance, and there is no shame in asking for help. In fact, it is quite courageous to do so!

In a nutshell, mental health matters and is a critical component of our overall health and well-being for children & adults alike. When we talk openly and often about mental health, not only do we actively help reduce stigma and normalize the importance of taking care of this part of ourselves, but we also model for kids that it’s always okay to talk about their feelings and ask for help if/when they need it. So, let’s keep the conversation going–not just in the month of May–but all year long!

Evergreen's School Garden:  Growing into 2026

Our school garden is in a time of transition, and it is time for a collaboration of the next generation of school families!  The garden is a lovely space that is in need of helping hands as we approach the 2025-2026 school year.

Volunteering with the school garden will often involve physical labor. These personal interests are a plus:

  • digging,

  • raking,

  • harvesting,

  • planting

  • and weeding while chatting with a fellow volunteer friend

  • Picking up gardening supplies

  • Attending a group work day

  • Light carpentry and repairs

  • Volunteering in the garden with classrooms

  • ALSO- there are many tasks that need to be completed for the garden that don't involve ANYTHING mentioned above!  Do you want to help but prefer other ways?  Volunteer schedule coordination, sourcing supplies, seeking out collaborations within the community and grant writing are all big needs of the garden.

If you would like to join the handful of parents that have started this conversation and become a part of the next iteration of the Evergreen School Garden, please reach out to Evergreen part time staffer and parent, Melanie Corl.
