Grad Panel Judges Needed
We are looking for four more people to help with Grad Panels. Parents of 3rd-7th graders, this is a great time to come witness what our eighth graders are capable of! It is a great time to assess the soft skills that our school instill in students. It’s a great time to volunteer if you think you’re going to be evaluating upcoming middle school choices.
Judges are given rubrics and instructions on how to use these to give students feedback on their presentations. It’s great to have parents with many perspectives on the panel, so don’t worry if your background is not in education.
Plan to arrive at 4:45pm. Judges will be provided with dinner, snacks, and refreshments as our way of showing our gratitude to you!
Greeting Card Fundraiser
Send a smile to your favorite Evergreen students to celebrate another successful school year!
This year we are offering to customize and print a range of greeting cards for Moving Up and Graduation Ceremonies for a suggested donation of $3-5/card to help support the Evergreen Annual Fund. All profits from this fundraiser will go toward the Evergreen Annual Fund's goal of $100,000. The Evergreen Annual Fund goes toward faculty and staff salaries as well as supporting our beautiful campus.
Evergreen Annual Fund
Thank you to everyone who has supported the Greeting Card Fundraiser! So far, we have raised almost $400! These gifts will be rolled over to the Evergreen Annual Fund after the last day of school.
Did you know: if all of our families set up a monthly recurring gift of just $5, (roughly the same amount as one of the greeting cards) we would have $20K over the course of the year?
Twenty thousand dollars would make a major difference in meeting our annual goal, currently we need less than $24K.
80% of Evergreen's annual budget is used for teacher and staff salaries? Meaning your dollars go to what matters most: having invested, qualified professionals in classrooms.
We appreciate your continued support as an integral part of our Evergreen community.
Test Anxiety and End of Grade Testing
Welcome back to the Counseling Corner!
This week we are going to talk about TESTS! As many of us know, testing can cause us all different types of stress and anxiety. And this is even more true for students. When students experience test anxiety they are actually experiencing a type of performance anxiety.
Performance anxiety is when we feel the pressure to do well in a certain situation where performance counts towards something. When we’re feeling this way we may experience some physical symptoms like butterflies in our stomach, increased heart rate, or feeling sweaty and shaky. This anxiety is a result of anticipating something stressful and it can affect our mind and body. When we experience stress our body releases the hormone adrenaline, which prepares us for our fight or flight response. A little bit of stress can help us focus and actually perform better. But too much stress can lead to overwhelm and get in the way of what we need to do.
So how can we help our students combat test anxiety? Here are some helpful things that students can add to their routine to avoid feeling those nervous feelings before a big test:
Practice good study habits
Create a pretest routine
Practice relaxation techniques
Be sure to hydrate and nourish your body with food
Get enough sleep
Speak with a teacher if you feel nervous
Accept mistakes and be gentle with yourself
When we think that we can’t do something or are not going to do well, it often causes our anxiety to increase. We want our students to feel capable and confident when it comes to test taking and other challenging situations they will face. It is important to encourage our students to have a healthy mindset when it comes to performance anxiety. Changing the way we think about tests and academic performance can influence the way we perform. By helping students look at the bigger picture and helping them change their perspective surrounding tests, we can lessen the stress surrounding these events. By focusing on progress versus perfection, students are better able to bounce back from stressful tests and fear of failure. Here are some test-taking strategies that may be helpful for your student when it’s time to perform:
Set aside enough time to study independently or with a group of classmates. Over studying can lead to burnout and causes you to forget the information
Go to bed early the night before the test - getting good sleep will help you be productive on test day
Read through the whole exam before answering any questions
You do not have to start with the first question
Use the process of elimination for multiple-choice questions where you are unsure of the answer
Try to focus on the test for the majority of the time - try not to let your mind wander
Show all of your work for problem-solving questions
Don’t be afraid to raise your hand if you have a question or if something is unclear
-and most importantly, remember–a test is just one measure of learning! There are so many other ways that students can demonstrate and celebrate their skills. Encourage them to focus not on the test grade, but on putting in their best effort.
