Fall Family Nights
Held at the end of October each year Fall Family Nights is our Fall Celebration of Learning. In the lead up to this event, students evaluate which pieces they want to display and put together a portfolio of their best works of the first trimester. Showcasing their work in a public manner gives the work more meaning, and it’s an excellent way for parents to see the work that is going on in the classroom and the school, and another opportunity to connect with your child’s teachers.
Fall Family Nights takes place over the course of two evenings with even and odd numbered grades split between Wednesday and Thursday Night. (Kindergarten joins the even grades).
Parents get to explore their child’s classroom, see samples of quality craftsmanship, and learn more about the learning expeditions happening in the classroom. Enrichment Classrooms are also open for exploration. Program details will be listed in The Scoop in the days leading up to the event.
Fall Family Nights is also an evening of micro-fundraisers with offerings from particular classes or programs. Proceeds go to bolster those programs/ classroom budgets, or may be put toward lowering the cost of End of Year trips. Cash is king for fundraisers like these, but we are also expanding our ability to accept credit and debit cards.

Kindergarteners have worked hard during the expedition, Our Bodies, Our Selves, to learn how we are alike, how we are different, and what makes a classroom family. Come check out our Classroom Family Tree, All About Me books, self portraits, our class “quilt” and more! Our students will be excited to show you what they have been working on in this first part of their journey in The Fabulous World of Kindergarten!

Second Graders will be showcasing their expedition, I, You, We, Community. Via their community journal reflections, they will lead visitors on a tour through our Evergreen and larger community to learn who is in our community and what they do to contribute to our community. An additional highlight of the evening will include each child’s Flat Me and a comparison of the community where their Flat Me went and Asheville. We are excited to share our hard work with you.

Fourth Graders are deep into their expedition, A Bird’s Eye View. They have used a variety of sources and fieldwork to learn about birds of western North Carolina. In preparation for their individual research projects, the 4th graders have worked in small groups to become experts on the physical and behavioral adaptations of our state bird, Northern Cardinal. Join us on a walk through a large, 4th grade created picture book, Diary of a Cardinal, inspired by Doreen Cronin’s Diary of a Worm.

Sixth Graders will be showing off their expedition, What’s All the Buzz About? Students have begun exploring global trade routes and imagining how our global systems of power can be deeply affected by the rise and fall of specific empires. Over the next few weeks, we will be tracking the origin and spread of coffee in particular and determining how we can use perception and imagination to create stories that are buzzworthy and empowering for our kinderbuddies. In the ELA/SS classroom, you will see students’ country research presentations. In the Math/Science classroom, you will learn about the connections students have made about coffee farming and bird migration in the rainforest. Our 6th grade coffee business, Gathering Grounds, will be selling organic, fair trade, shade grown coffee!

Eighth Graders will showcase their work from the Untold Stories of Appalachia Expedition, where we focused on stories of Affrilachia and Cherokee. Students have been asking important questions about the stories that get told within a community. What are the different ways to tell a story? How do these stories shape our perspective? Whose stories are the loudest, and whose often go unnoticed? In science, students have learned about various Affrilachian and Cherokee recipes through the chemistry standards. We are getting excited for our culmination, where we will prepare and enjoy the recipes we’ve become so familiar with this trimester.

Environmental Education at Our School comes to life through grade-level expeditions, classroom investigations, fieldwork, and service learning. This fall, students have launched symbolic monarchs on their journey to Mexico, explored how leaves can be both different and alike, learned how to create dichotomous keys, conducted a plot survey of a constructed wetland on campus and experimented with growing radishes in a variety of soil types. Everywhere you look, environmental awareness, scientific curiosity, and hands-on action are woven into our learning. Support Environmental Education programming and enjoy something sweet by purchasing local Haw Creek Honey!
