Exhibition Nights

Exhibition Nights is a chance for families to gather to show their pride in and curiosity about students’ amazing educational adventures! Much like Fall Family Nights, Exhibition Nights are your spring-time opportunity to witness the growth that has happened during the school year!

Students work very hard to preparing for this evening. Teachers give parents a sort of program for the evening. These programs offer checklists of student work on display, they help you identify Learning Targets of the expeditions/ work, and may even give you some ‘Guiding Question’ prompts that you can discuss with your student.

Attendees can ask scholars about service projects, community guests, and fieldwork that led up to the evening’s celebration. And most of all appreciate all the efforts—students’, teachers’ and your own—that went into this extravaganza of learning.

Scholars and their guests are encouraged to take the time to revisit past educational adventures and say hellos to favorite educators, or get a sneak peek at expeditions in their future by walking the halls and visiting other classrooms.

First Grade with Misty and Simone, Katie and Sarah:

Tools We Use - Come and enjoy the work of our budding scientists! Discover how magnets, balance, forces, friction and gravity affect our everyday lives. Student scientists are excited to teach you how everyday tools make our lives easier. We welcome you to learn about physics with our fabulous first graders!

Third Grade with Mikhayla and Bonnie, Robin and Natalie:

Our Place in Space and Rooted in Community - 3rd graders will be showcasing their Scholastic Magazines they wrote about climate change. Parents will be invited to read them and answer the corresponding questions. Also on display will be the student’s “Tree Ring Life Story” artwork. Parents are encouraged to ask their child(ren) about what communities they are a part of and to share significant moments in their lives that have shaped them to be the person they are today.

Fifth Grade with Sarah, Rachel, Ethan, and Sara:

Our History, Our Voice- This year, our fifth graders are continuing the tradition of exhibiting their U.S. History Eyewitness Accounts. We began this project by researching different events in U.S. History. Each student chose a topic that interested them most. After extensive research and note-taking, we embark on creating a historical fiction story that leads the reader through each student’s chosen event. Also on display will be body systems posters.

Seventh grade with Jason, Whit, and Ben:  Global Citizenship

7th grade is deep into their global citizens expedition! They will also feature work from the past trimester, including projects exploring air quality in NC, stop motion films that demonstrate cell mitosis, posters celebrating International Women’s Day, and alternative book covers for their current novel Two Degrees. You may also get a chance to see Coffee on 7th in action!

Doors to the school will be open at 5:30 for parents to visit classrooms. Please plan to complete your classroom visits by 6:30 PM so that teachers and staff can go home to their families!

Kindergarten with Selma and Alissa, Heather and Laura:

Helping Hands, Helping Hearts. How do workers help us in the community? What is a community? Kindergarteners will be ready to teach you all about a worker they have studied and interviewed, with an artistic representation of their workplace and research they have completed on display. Come grab a steering wheel and explore all of the workers who work in our very own classroom community!

Second Grade with Marty and Jenny, Susan and Mary Beth:

Whatever the Weather. How are clouds formed?  What are the most common types of clouds? What tools does a meteorologist use to measure the weather? How is an anemometer used?  Come and walk through our weather world and let our second grade experts enlighten you with their research knowledge.  In both classrooms you will find meteorologists who can explain storms, wind, clouds, weather measurements and prediction.  Don’t forget to stop and watch the second graders on our very own Weather Channel, WECCS!

Fourth Grade with Theresa and Deidre, Kevin and Grace:

How have people, events, and developments brought about changes in North Carolina?  How have the values and beliefs of different indigenous and racial groups contributed to the development of North Carolina?  Find out as you travel through the fourth grade classrooms to experience the journey that fourth graders have taken throughout their Humans of North Carolina expedition.  Students will share how they have investigated a variety of primary and secondary sources and deeply studied a historical fiction novel, to help them answer these important guiding questions.  Fourth graders have created “I am From” poems as a way to discover and share their own unique identities.

Sixth Grade with Jone, Marni, and Kristian:

In the science classroom, students have just finished up our expedition, Earth and Beyond where they explored the patterns and characteristics of Earth that make it habitable for humans. We took our learning further and compared those characteristics to Mars where we designed Mars colonies in Minecraft. Come check out our designs!

In the Social Studies/ELA classroom, we have just finished reading “The Odyssey” and will be displaying our dioramas! Explore the connections students have made with the Hero’s Journey, and make sure to ask your student, “So, which scene was the abyss?”.

We have also wrapped up our unit in ancient Greece where students explored the city-states Athens and Sparta. We asked questions like, how do Athenian and American democracies compare? What differences are there between Sparta and Athens, and why did they go to war? Take a look at our Peloponnesian war comics and see the ways our students modernized historical events.

Eighth Grade with Mindy, Dusty, and Billie:

Students and families are invited to our 8th Grade Exhibition Night, an interactive showcase of student learning and exploration. During the evening, guests will rotate through various stations where students will showcase their learning. You’ll have a chance to practice hands-on math, learn about some exciting science topics, review and ask questions about student created websites, and organize a timeline of events. This event celebrating student curiosity, creativity, and growth will offer families a meaningful look at the learning journey of our 8th graders.

Doors to the school will be open at 5:30 for parents to visit classrooms. Please plan to complete your classroom visits by 6:30 PM so that teachers and staff can go home to their families!
