Hi families,
As we enter our third week of school, I hope you all are settling into your school routines and getting the hang of the traffic line! 🤞🏻 🤞🏻
Infinite Campus Parent Portal:
You should have gotten a message from Kelly on Tuesday about your parent portal setup. Please get that set up as soon as you can, and enable texting (if that’s your preference). You won’t be able to receive texts from us unless you do this. This will be the way that you receive many messages from school and where you check your child’s grades and view report cards, along with other uses.
Lockdown Drill Information:
A heads up, next Friday (9/12), we will be doing a lockdown drill as a school. This is a time for us to practice how to react in the event we have a danger to our students on campus. Thursday, the day before the drill, teachers will talk with students about it, and this conversation will be framed in a developmentally appropriate manner. You can expect to hear more information from your child’s grade level about what they discuss. I would encourage you to talk with your kids about it as well, and please remind older students that their discussions and language about the drill will be different than what younger kids hear.
Over the past few years and through consultation with law enforcement, our emergency response in this type of situation has evolved. Our current response would vary based on specifics at the time of the emergency but students could be instructed to run, to hide and barricade, or to fight (always the last resort). We will discuss the options with students (as age appropriate to do so) but during our drill on Friday, we will only practice the hiding/barricading option.
Please let me know if you have questions about the drill, and please let your child's teachers know if your child has specific needs around this practice event.
Community Circle:
Please join us for our first Community Circle of the year on September 15th at 8:45am in the gym. It’s one of the few times we’re all together and we love having parents join!
Next Tuesday! Fundraising is never Sweeter
Fundraising is never sweeter than when you are gathering flowers in a field at dusk while the children play.
Pack a picnic dinner and bring the family!
September 9th from 5-7pm
Little Farm, Black Mountain is inviting Evergreen Families to come to their Swannanoa Field to gather, pick, arrange, and kick back on the beautiful property that fills their farmstand!
Prices start at $20. Owners, and Evergreen parents, Mary and Kiera will be donating 75% of the proceeds to the school, making this fun summer’s end activity a great way to support our school!
Come “Be the Village” amongst the blooms!
Sept 15th - Community Circle
Throughout the year we empower students to host a Community Circle. These events ask students to explore a central theme, connect it to their lives and work here at school, and present their ideas publicly. It is really wonderful to see the students supporting each other as each grade level presents their thoughts and reflections.
Community Circles happen at 8:45am in the gym.
When we gather as a community, it is also an excellent time to host a DONATION DRIVE! On September 15th we will be collecting donations to benefit Appalachian Community Relief. Follow the link to see their current donation needs and learn more about the organization. Also, see the item below for a message from the director regarding their most urgent needs.
Family Friendly Volunteer Opportunity - Sept 27th
Helene really drove home the importance of community. Of showing up.
In the spirit of Being the Village We Wish To See in the World we are promoting family friendly volunteer opportunities where we can show up as an Evergreen community. Let’s make the anniversary of Helene a time of recommitment to one of our core values as a school: service. And let’s band together to support each other and create hope and resiliency in the face of all the big feelings this anniversary is going to bring forth.
Click below to sign your family up to be part of the volunteer squad giving back to organizations that helped sustain us after the storm, and still sustain our community.
Can’t make it on the 27th but still want to get involved? Join in our Donation Drive! Check out the list of current donation needs on Appalachian Community Relief’s website and drop off items at the school by Sept 26th for delivery to the distribution center.
“Our biggest food needs are canned goods (soups, vegetables, canned meat), individual snacks, & hamburger helper-type boxed meals. Our biggest non-food needs are toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, menstrual products, and cleaning supplies.”
Extracurricular Interest Survey!
This year our AIG program is offering some extracurricular enrichment opportunities that are open to any and all interested students.
If you've got a bookworm, a puzzler, a budding mathematician, an outside-the-box thinker, or a curious kiddo, take a look to see if anything below might be of interest!
Wolfpack Sports Interest Survey!
Is your 6th, 7th or 8th grade child interested in playing Flag Football, Basketball, Soccer or Ultimate Frisbee at Evergreen this year?
If so, please fill this out ASAP!
We may also have volleyball and running/Cross country, depending on interest.
Please note: we are also starting the sign-up for Flag Football alongside this survey, as that season will start next week!
Upper Grade Parents, please see the email sent from athletic.director@ on 9/3 for more information.
An Invitation from East Asheville Public Library
The week of the anniversary of Helene, Buncombe County Public Libraries will be holding a tabletop puppet show on Wednesday the 24th from 4-5pm, about unexpected friendships and community as the characters handle navigating a storm and a flood themselves.
The libraries are open on the anniversary date of Helene, and since our side of town was hit hard, our library wanted to make space for the healing and recovery mindset to continue. We will be having drop-in activities all day, and our storytime in the morning will be focused more about ways to talk to kids about Helene and helping to process emotional regulation and more of that kind of topic than a typical storytime topic at the library. We will be joined by a counselor from Rural Housing Authority to help navigate this topic and there will be a therapeutic art craft afterwards.
The afternoon is more geared towards our adults; there is going to be space for people to record their experiences with equipment loaned to us from Special Collections, our public archive downtown. We will have therapy dogs during two different hours throughout the day, and there's going to be a somatic community circle.

Encouraging Our Community Members to Model Life-Long Learning for Our Students:
Building Bridges Fall Program Starts September 15th
This nine week fall course will happen Monday evenings!
Each Building Bridges session offers education and dialogue about the dynamics of racism and is an opportunity to explore how race has impacted our relationships, communities, and institutions, particularly in Asheville. It is also an opportunity to foster antiracism in ourselves and in our community.
Access scholarships are available, click the Building Bridges Logo to get started.
“I HIGHLY recommend this important experience.”
Mission: Building Bridges fosters antiracism by educating people on how to intentionally engage in dialogues about racism.
Vision: Building Bridges deliberately dismantles and disrupts racism, one conversation at a time.
This year, more than ever, We really Need every penny.
