Fall Family Nights
Part of our expectations of students is for them to present their work publicly. This practice is part of the EL Education model and is another way to make their work meaningful, by sharing it with you. Please make a plan to attend Fall Family Night with your child to see the expedition work they have been doing and celebrate their achievements.
We split the school population between two nights, this year that is:
Wednesday, October 22nd
for Grades K,2,4,6, & 8
Thursday, October 23rd
for Grades 1,3,5, & 7
If this is your first rodeo, check out our Fall Family Nights Page for more background and details.
Key Details:
Lower Lot will be open for this event and there will be a shuttle running from AVL Gospel.
Please leave all pets at home.
There will be no food vendors this year.

Restraint Collapse
We hope you all had a fun and restorative Fall Break. This week we are talking about the phenomenon known as After-School Restraint Collapse, a natural emotional release that can happen when kids arrive home after a long day of exerting mental, emotional, and physical effort to hold it together at school. If you are a parent who has noticed that their child or teen seems to “fall apart” after school—meltdowns, irritability, withdrawal, or emotional outbursts that seem to come out of nowhere—this post is for you!
What looks like a tantrum, defiance, or an overreaction to us is actually the body and brain’s way of decompressing after working hard to meet expectations all day long. Click the link above for a deeper look at why this happens and what it can look like in both children and teens, as well as practical strategies and considerations for supporting them through it. Additionally, understanding the difference between tantrums and meltdowns is useful insight to gain, particularly for parents of neurodivergent and/or sensory sensitive children. If listening is more your jam or you’d like to hear more from the experts, we highly recommend this helpful podcast from the Institute of Child Psychology: “Navigating After School Restraint Collapse, which offers additional insight and actionable tips for helping kids feel safe, secure, and supported as they unwind from the demands of the school day.

Join us as we celebrate Hispanic/latine heritage Month on Facebook!
In honor of Latine Heritage Month, which started on September 15th, we are highlighting the books by Latine authors and illustrators on our Facebook page.
There are links to authors performing read alouds of their picture books, and reviews, teasers, or book discussion posts for upper grades and middle school level books.
All books featured are available through the Evergreen library with the exception of the last post which is more of a wishlist for new books released this year!
Halloween Parade
Each year Evergreen holds a Halloween Parade! Students wear or bring their costumes (Check classroom newsletters for guidance from your grade level/s!) and a schoolwide parade of costumes is held on the field. Parents are welcome to attend, it’s more fun with an audience!
Friday, October 31st @ 2pm
When selecting a costume please be mindful that we have a variety of ages at the school, costumes must be appropriate for our younger friends. Our standard golden rule of costumes is: “No Blood, No Gore, No Weapons of War.”
We would also like to remind our community that cultural icons are costumes, a depiction of a whole culture based on stereotypes is not. For more watch, “My Culture is not a Costume”.
