Here’s an invite to share with anyone who might be interested in learning more about Evergreen Middle School.

MARCH 16th: Spring Fundraiser & Evergreen Phenomenon:
Tourney of the Hoops!

TL;DR: Please solicit $111/ea for the Spring Fundraiser this year. Ask 10 people for $10.

Welcome to March Madness! This year we will be going straight from March Break into our big Spring Fundraiser that supports our teachers and students!

Our goal for this fundraiser is $50,000. This money is crucial to our school’s budget. Literally keeping lights on and salaries paid.

During Spirit Week each grade level will be racing to see who can reach their grade level goal of $5,555 first. We will be offering fun incentives each day for the class who gets the most pledges from the day before!

Since there are approximately 50 students per grade we need each student to think of their individual goal as being $111!

How do I register?

  1. Go to www.givebutter.com/tourney26 and click DONATE

  2. Click DONATE, select an amount and select your grade in the ‘credit team/team member’ drop down field.

  3. Check out as per usual.
(YOU DO NOT NEED TO TIP GIVEBUTTER! Select ‘Other and enter $0.00)

  4. Have 2 students? Go back to Step 2 and Repeat.

  5. SHARE the Fundraiser Link (See Step One) and watch your grade levels exceed their set goals!

Don’t want to pay cc fees? Bring us cash!

Important Tourney Dates

  • March 2-6th - Teacher Workdays and March Break

  • March 9th- 13th - Pledge/Spirit Week -
    LET THE PLEDGING BEGIN!

  • March 16th - Tourney of the Hoops Game Day!
    DETAILS COMING SOON.

TOURNEY FAQS

Q: What is Tourney of the Hoops?
A: It’s a day for students to get together and play a uniquely Evergreen game, Capture the Hoops.

Q: What is Capture the Hoops?
A: The game was invented by former Evergreen Teacher, Chris Weaver and has remained a staple of the third grade experience ever since! At one point we had such a devoted cadre of Capturers that families gathered to play the game at area parks on the weekends!

It became a tradition for Third Grade to play the game on Friday afternoons and remains so to this day.

There have been some evolutions in the rules through the years, but you can think of it like Capture the Flag, but with hoops not flags. There are many hoops, not just one per team, and the game is played in the round across four quadrants with a free space in the center affectionately named Coney Island at some point in recent history.

Q: My student is in Kindergarten/First/Second Grade! They won’t know how to play! What shall I do?

A: Capture The Hoops is a bit much for K-2 Kiddos. We teach them Hoop Based Team Building Games to ensure they also have a fun and safe day that’s not overwhelming!

Importance of Co-Regulation

Co-regulation is an important and powerful way to help children manage emotions and develop resilience. It is a mutual act that is essentially an “exchange of calm” between two people and involves:

  • Providing support: Offering understanding, empathy, and a listening ear

  • Modeling: Demonstrating how to regulate emotions through calm behavior

  • Coaching: Providing feedback and helping others learn to recognize and respond to their own emotional cues

  • Creating a supportive environment: Structuring a space that encourages self-regulation

When people are in close proximity, their brains and nervous systems can read each other’s emotional states and influence the production and release of certain hormones such as cortisol and oxytocin, which are involved in stress response and feelings of safety, security, and connection. When we can remain present and calm, we are demonstrating that big emotions can be managed, which is a crucial first step to self-regulation.

Research shows that children who experience consistent co-regulation develop better emotional awareness, empathy, and coping skills. Remember, it’s okay if you’re also learning these skills along the way; modeling calm responses not only helps your child but strengthens your connection too. Let's make co-regulation a small part of each day, helping our kids grow into resilient, self-aware adults!

Math Counts

Evergreen wants to celebrate and congratulate the seven students who comprised our inaugural MathCounts team! These seventh and eighth graders represented our school at the Asheville chapter competition last Saturday, hosted at T. C. Roberson High School. Competitors competed as individuals in Sprint and Target rounds, then worked together in groups of four for the Team round. The final round of the day--the Countdown Round--was a timed, game-show style, head-to-head competition among the top scorers of each school. Not only did we learn a whole lot about the competitive math scene in the region, but kids also got to experience a whole different level of challenge in math. We look forward to continuing to grow our program over the coming years! To learn more about MathCounts and our other academic enrichment offerings, click here!

Grandfriends’ Day - February 13th @ 9am

Here’s the info we sent to Grandfriends earlier this week, if you have someone who is coming but didn’t get their RSVP in, please let them know the following:

Arrival: Please do not arrive before 8:45am! You definitely do not want to get stuck in our morning drop-off traffic! Doors open at 9:00am. When you arrive, guests can make their way to the gym to pick-up their name tags and purchase a cup of coffee from our Seventh Grade students.

Park: We are asking teachers and staff to park below so that there will be a fair amount of parking spots open in the main lot. There will also be a shuttle running between the lower lot and the school.

Dismissal:

Again, please do not plan to take your student with you at 11:00am. Since it is so early in the school day, we would not even be able to mark them as present for the day! Also, since it is the day before Valentine's many classes have parties planned.

Coffee Sales: Seventh Grade has started a small business called Coffee on Seventh. They will be offering regular drip coffee for grandfolk on the go.

Seventh graders have been active in all aspects of the business from developing a business plan, budgeting, ordering supplies, menu creation, market research, etc. They sell coffee to teachers and staff weekly. Ultimately, seventh grade will be voting on how to use the profits from this business. Some of the options are: lowering the cost of their End of Year trip for all seventh grade students, or using the money to bestow a legacy gift to the school that they could enjoy during their eighth grade year. Please consider supporting their endeavor!

Resilience: Growing Stronger Together

Resilience is the ability to adapt, problem-solve, and keep moving forward even during challenging times. In our school community, we support resilience by helping students build social-emotional awareness, practice healthy coping strategies, and remember that mistakes are part of learning and growth.

At school, we nurture resilience by encouraging a growth mindset, helping students name and manage emotions, and reminding them that mistakes are part of learning. At home, families can support resilience by maintaining routines, modeling healthy coping strategies, and creating space for open conversations.

Simple ways to build resilience at home and school:

  • Encourage problem-solving and independence

  • Celebrate effort, not just outcomes

  • Practice mindfulness or quiet reflection

  • Stay connected to supportive peers and adults

  • Focus on strengths and positive self-talk

Resources for families:

As always, please reach out to the counseling office if we can support you or your student. Together, we can help our children grow, adapt, and thrive.

We also encourage families to explore our local Resources for Resilience organization- they are a tremendous community resource! They provide free Listening Circles and virtual gatherings where caregivers can learn and practice resiliency tools together.

February Director’s Letter

It’s been a bumpy few weeks of weather - I know delays and closures can be frustrating, especially since weather and road conditions are widely variable across the county. In case you’re wondering, we’re allowed to use a max of 5 remote learning days for weather each year, and today was our 5th. We have also used 8 of the 11 hours reserved for delayed starts. If we have more winter weather that requires closure, we will be closed (not remote) and will need to make up the hours by adding or extending days.

The kitchen project is moving forward - we have broken ground, and the building is complete and awaiting delivery!

The beginning of the calendar year brings a new executive committee on the board. We are excited to have Ashley Shores-Bobowski as our new board chair, Keilayn Tate as the vice-chair, and Rob Durr and Isaac Rowles staying on as secretary and treasurer, respectively. We really appreciate their willingness to share their expertise and time this year.

Starting this year, we are building a partnership with the Verner Center for Early Learning. The board voted last month to amend our admissions policy to allow for some preferential spots in the lottery for students enrolled at Verner, and in addition we will be working on building relationships between Verner and Evergreen students.

I hope we will see you soon for some of our upcoming events - GrandFriends’ Day, Community Circle, Tourney of the Hoops, and Exhibition Nights! See the Scoop and Evergreen calendars for more details.

Grandfriends’ Day - February 13th @ 9am

We will be blocking off more accessible spaces for Grandfriend’s Day. We will have the Lower Lot open with a shuttle running.

Grandfriends Day is going to be a little different this year because we’re moving it a bit earlier in the day. The event will run from 9am-11am. This is important because it means that if your Grandfriend takes your child home/out after the event it is too early in the day to count toward attendance, and they would be marked absent for the day. Please encourage your Grandfriend to come- but to leave students to complete their school day!

Taking Care of Yourself So You Can Take Care of Your Children

Over the past several years, and especially in recent months, many families have experienced ongoing uncertainty, stress, and moments that feel overwhelming or even frightening. From the lasting impact of the COVID pandemic to hurricane Helene, social unrest, political division, and concerns about safety and the future, it’s understandable if you feel unsettled.

Parents and caregivers are carrying heavy emotional loads while trying to stay strong for their children. If that’s you, please know this: you are not alone, and it’s okay to acknowledge how hard this is.

Uncertainty Is Hard—for Adults and Children

Many parents ask thoughtful, important questions:

  • How do I talk to my child about what’s happening in the world in an age-appropriate way?

  • Should I bring up difficult topics if my child hasn’t asked?

  • What if my child is anxious but doesn’t want to worry me?

  • How do I help my child feel safe when I don’t have all the answers?

These questions don’t mean you’re doing something wrong—they mean you care deeply!

Put Your Own Oxygen Mask on First

  • You can’t pour from an empty cup! Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential. When adults are grounded and supported, children benefit too.

  • Chronic stress can take a toll on the body and mind over time (often called allostatic load). That’s why ongoing, intentional self-care matters, not just for you, but for your family.

  • Care for your mental and emotional health by noticing feelings without judgment and expressing them in healthy ways (talking with someone you trust, journaling, prayer, or professional support).

  • Support your spiritual well-being through grounding practices like meditation, prayer, time in nature, or quiet reflection.

  • Protect your physical health by prioritizing sleep, hydration, movement, nourishing food, and routine health care.

  • Build small daily habits: keep balanced routines, spend time outdoors, limit news and social media, connect and laugh with others, do something that brings you joy, and practice kindness—toward others and yourself.

Modeling Matters

Children learn as much from what we do as from what we say. When they see adults setting boundaries, coping in healthy ways, and asking for support, they learn it’s okay to do the same. When you care for your mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being, you are better equipped to support your child.

We hope the following resources support you as you create intentional time and space for your well-being:

Remember: taking care of yourself is one of the most powerful ways you can take care of your child.
