Allowing kids to take risks and fail

There is a lot of talk these days about the increasing rates of youth anxiety, depression, suicidality, and addictions. One way we can combat the contributing factors that are out of our control (peer pressure, advertising, self-pressure, genetics, etc.) is to tune into our students’ need for experiencing age-appropriate risks and challenges. When we offer kids the space to navigate a problem or mistake independently, they grow their ability to cope with stress, distress, and discomfort that can happen in real life situations. An individual’s ability to practice learning through mistakes when the relative cost is small can positively impact one’s decision-making skills in future higher risk scenarios.

Sometimes being a supportive parent means allowing children the space to experience and work through a problem, challenge, or mistake while offering them unconditional love and listening, rather than fixing it for them. This can be a really hard thing to do when it is in our loving nature to protect our children from perceived harm, pain, or threat!
