Health Benefits of Nature
Time Outside is More Than Just Fun, It’s a Healthy Choice!
As the days grow longer and everything begins to bloom, this time of year offers a natural opportunity to step outside and recognize the beauty and flow of life around us. Spending time in nature is more than just a seasonal activity–it’s a simple, powerful, and usually free (!!!) way to support both physical and mental well-being for children and adults alike. In fact, intentional time outside has a multitude of whole-health benefits, such as:
Physical Health: Outdoor environments invite natural movement which supports strength, coordination, and overall health. Whether it’s walking, climbing, playing, or exploring, moving our bodies on a regular basis also supports health and longevity for our muscles, bones, and joints.
Sleep Health: Fresh air and sunlight can help regulate sleep patterns and boost energy levels.
Emotional Health: Nature has a grounding, calming effect on the body and mind. Spending time outdoors can help reduce feelings of stress, frustration, and overwhelm, while supporting a more positive mood. Even brief time outside has been linked to reduced stress hormones and improved immune functioning. For children specifically, regular access to outdoor time is associated with increased emotional regulation, fewer behavioral challenges, and a greater sense of overall well-being.
Cognitive (mental + brain) Health: Stepping away from busy, structured environments and into nature gives the brain a chance to reset. Outdoor time has been shown to improve attention, focus, problem-solving skills, and frustration tolerance. This can be especially helpful for students who may feel mentally fatigued or overstimulated during the school day.
Learning & Development: Nature-based play encourages curiosity, creativity, and flexible thinking. Whether children are building, imagining, or exploring, they are developing important skills that support both academic learning and social growth. Time outdoors can also promote cooperation, communication, and confidence.
As we enter this season of growth and renewal, consider finding small ways to incorporate nature into your family’s routine. Whether it’s an after-dinner walk, time at a local park, or simply playing outside for a few extra minutes, these intentional moments for connecting to the natural world around us can have a positive impact on our health and well-being. So ditch those screens and SPRING into better health for your mind, body, and heart space by getting outside, connecting with nature, and experiencing all of its magnificence around us.
Okay, I’m outside…now what?
