Nutrition Program Updates

Starting November 1st: Families no longer need to pre-order meals! Just have your child come to the lunch kiosk!
You can always find a current menu on our Nutrition Page!

As we prepare to break ground on the new kitchen we are asking families to be part of the process of designing our new menus!

Please take the time to fill out this survey to let us know what your family needs from the kitchen!

Children’s Grief Awareness

November 17th was Children’s Grief Awareness Day on which people and organizations around the world aim to raise awareness about how grief impacts children and how we can support their healing and wellness following the experience of loss.

According to the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model an estimated 6.4 million children in the United States will be bereaved by the age of 18. Research shows that unaddressed childhood grief can lead to both short- and long-term challenges, including higher risk for disrupted development, trauma, low academic performance, mental health issues, and early mortality. Additionally, bereaved youth are 175% more likely to develop a substance use disorder in adulthood. And no, unfortunately that is not a typo.

Many societies hold rigid ideas about how grief “should” look and how long it should last, often expecting people to move on in a predictable, linear timeline. These constructs show up across cultures, but they tend to oversimplify a process that is deeply individual, non-linear, and shaped by personal history and context. There is no “getting over” or “completing” the grief process. It simply changes over time.

Grief is different for everyone, and children may express grief differently from adults. Young children in particular may not have the ability to fully understand the concept of death and its finality, making symptoms harder to catch. Kids need advocates in their corner who understand the grief process and can offer safe, compassionate spaces where they feel seen, heard, and supported.

If your child/family experiences a loss and you’d like to discuss options for supporting your child/family, feel free to reach out to your school counselors: Annie (K-4) and Rachel (5-8) and we will be happy to guide you through those important next steps. There is no going around grief, we all have to go through it. The most important thing to remember is that no one has to go through it alone. 🧡

Giving Tuesday is coming up December 2nd!

Our goal for Giving Tuesday is to raise $5,000. Please join us on Social Media for our “5K By The End of the Day” campaign. We’ll be asking families to share our post or download info slides and create your own post supporting the school!

Water Bottle Sanitization

We’re looking for someone to take the water bottles from the lost and found and run them through a sanitize cycle so we can move them into the Robin’s Nest.

Thursday Emotional Support Snacks

They’ve made it through Hump Day, and having a little sweet (or savory) incentive to keep smiling really goes a long way at the end of the week. Show the teachers you care by signing up. Click the graphic to get started!

Evergreen Spirit of Giving

It's time, once again, for the Evergreen tradition of helping families within our community provide a more cheerful holiday! Any family can send us their child(ren)'s wishes, and Evergreen Magical Elves will shop for the children of Evergreen!

  • Need some magic this season? Simply fill out this online Wish List. We have lots of givers, so please don't hesitate to let us know your child's wishes! All Giving Spirit wishes are kept anonymous, and the deadline for submissions is Nov. 21.

City of Asheville sponsors a Holiday Free Store

What is a free store? The holiday free store is an event open to the community where all items are given away at no cost. It is community-based and environmentally focused! This year's free store pop-up is a 3-day event: 2 days of accepting and sorting donations and 1 day of shopping and cleaning up.

Why have a holiday free store?
- Sharing what we have in abundance
- Coming together to build community resilience
- Reduce dependency on a system that often overuses resources
- Extending the life of items by keeping them out of the waste stream
- Lightening the financial burden for someone who may need or want an item
- Upcycle items for others for home use or gifting!

Who: This event is open to everyone. We need volunteers to help make it happen! Please spread the word, and sign up for a volunteer shift here. You are also welcome to donate items. Please see the accepted items list below.

When:

  • Thursday, Dec. 11, 4:30-8:30 pm: Accept and sort donations

  • Friday, Dec. 12, 10 am-6 pm:  Accept and sort donations; event set-up
