Breakfast Special!

Ms. Sarah has arranged a very special breakfast offering for Tourney Game Day! On Monday, March 16th, she’s going to have the breakfast kiosk stocked with bagels from Jersey South Bagel Co. as well as some other beloved hoops- Cheerios!

If your child doesn’t normally get breakfast, full price is $2.75. And this is definitely part of our free/reduced breakfast program if you participate in that.

Teachers and staff, if you want in on the bagel action, adult breakfast runs $3.00

Thanks Ms. Sarah for this fun addition to the Tourney of the Hoops Spirit!

By wearing fun, mismatched socks on March 21st, [or the school on the 20th] we are showing everyone that being different can be fun! When someone asks about your socks, take the oppurtunity to tell them about your friends Lucy, Sasha, and Mark and about World Down syndrome day!”

Navigating Tough Conversations: Children and the Media

Did you know that children are often more observant than adults? While adults tend to focus their attention on one task at a time, children often notice many things happening around them. This means that even something as routine as scrolling on your phone or having the news on in the background can catch a child’s attention.

In today’s digital world, children are exposed to more media than ever before. News about local and global conflicts or other troubling events can appear in headlines, conversations, or videos that children may see or overhear. Even when exposure is unintentional, these stories can bring up big feelings for kids, including fear, confusion, sadness, or worry. While adults may be better able to process difficult news, children’s developing brains often struggle to make sense of upsetting events. As a result, they may need extra reassurance, conversation, and support from the adults around them.

How to Support Your Child

Many families find themselves navigating difficult questions about these topics. Here are a few gentle ways to approach these conversations:

Start by listening. A simple way to begin is by asking, “What have you heard about this?” This helps you understand what your child already knows and creates a safe space for them to share their thoughts and questions.

Keep it simple. Offer clear, age-appropriate information. You don’t need to have all the answers. Often, what children need most is your calm presence and reassurance.

Focus on feelings. Instead of trying to explain every detail of why something is happening, it can be more helpful to focus on how your child is feeling. Let them know their feelings are valid and that you are there to support them.

Offer reassurance. These conversations will naturally grow and change as your child gets older. Simply talking together and reminding your child that they are safe and cared for can go a long way in helping them feel secure.

Keeping the conversation open and supportive helps children make sense of the world around them in a healthy and manageable way.
