Environmental Education

We believe providing a strong connection with the natural world is essential to the development of the heart, mind, and body of our students.

Because of our commitment to environmental education across curricula, we provide opportunities for all students to cultivate and demonstrate an understanding of ecology and environmental stewardship.

Evergreen is one of two schools in North Carolina and one of 78 schools nationwide to receive the inaugural U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award, which recognizes the highest performing green schools in the nation.

From the building of awareness and appreciation of the natural world, to service, and civic action, our ‘EE’ program empowers our students to be environmental changemakers.

Better World Week

Each April, Evergreen participates in Better World Day, an EL Education tradition that happens each year around Earth Day, and speaks to the same themes. Students and parent volunteers gather to learn, do service projects, and celebrate our Earth. Guest speakers, workshops that utilize music and art, and service projects led by local changemakers, all come together to present topics of pressing concern for our region and our planet.

Below is a gallery from our 2023 Better World Day, which we rounded out to a full week with continuing service projects, an equity workshop, continuing ed opportunities for staff, and other expeditionary activities for classes. Our 2023 event, “One World, Many Stories”, invited our community to explore the intersections of racial justice and environmental stewardship through the lens of storytelling.
