Annual Meeting This Thursday

We'll see you on campus this Thursday evening for our Annual Meeting. Come vote for new by-laws (which you can check out here.) We'll also be electing new board members, so we're posting the candidate's biographies here for you to read.

Board Member Candidate Biographies

Maureen Motley, Community Member
Maureen is Evergreen’s Director Emeritus and served as Executive Director from 1999-2003. She and three teachers wrote the school’s charter and, with the help of several parents, undertook the awesome task of starting the school.  Maureen is largely responsible for Evergreen’s culture of caring and community, which still exists today.

Maureen holds a bachelor’s degree in drama from UNCA and a master’s degree in social work from Bryn Mawr College.  She has worked as a licensed psychotherapist with both children and adults in private and public settings. She is currently the Clinical Manager at Family Preservation Services, Inc-Asheville, which is a behavioral healthcare agency providing a wide array of mental health services to children and adults.

Maureen has served on a number of boards including Central America Solidarity Organization, Rainbow Mountain Children’s School, Francine Delany New School for Children and, of course, Evergreen Community Charter School.

Maureen and her husband Stuart Zitin are the proud parents of Rachel, 21 years old and Ari, 15 years old, both Evergreen graduates.

David Spector, Parent
Dave and his family moved to Asheville two years ago, and were fortunate enough to both move in next door to Evergreen and to be able to enroll Clay as a kindergartener.  The Spectors are all outdoor enthusiasts, and the Evergreen expeditionary model feels like a great match.
Dave received an MS degree in Earth Science from Montana State University in 1999, following an undergraduate degree at Louisiana State University.  Through both education and experience, Dave has tried to define himself as a broad-based environmental scientist and planner, seeking middle ground between economic and environmental perspectives as a consultant, a county planner, and through his volunteer work.  Dave works for CDM, an international environmental consulting firm, and is currently managing projects related to recovery of Katrina-impacted communities.
Dave has been active with several community service organizations, sitting on the Board of Directors for the Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain, the Wolf River Conservation Society, and the Crosby Arboretum.  He is also a Commission member for the National Heritage Area of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and sits on the City of Asheville's Sustainability Advisory Committee for Energy and the Environment.
Jason Carter, Staff
Jason is currently the 7th and 8th grade lead math teacher for Evergreen's middle school and has been so for the past three years. He has been teaching for a total of seven years. Before becoming a teacher, Jason was the head Franchise Services representative for a national music retail chain, helping store owners across the country train employees, create business plans, and improve marketing.
Jason received his B.A. in English with minors in both mathematics and women studies from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and completed education classes at both UNCA and Western Carolina University. Before teaching at Evergreen, he taught math, science and social studies at East Burke Middle School near Hickory, NC and West McDowell Junior High in Marion, NC. He is currently married to Laura Branch, Evergreen's librarian and elementary school technology instructor.
Besides teaching math, Jason has a number of other educational activities and duties. He is the primary leader for the Asheville area People to People program and travels with high school students overseas every summer. He coaches Evergreen's award-winning Science Olympiad team, takes students geocaching on a regular basis, and is currently a member of the Level II Marimba band.
Dan Leroy, Community Member
Dan Leroy has spent the last ten years designing, developing and coordinating volunteer-based ecosystem restoration and service learning programs for a variety of organizations, including Adopt-A-Watershed, the Center for Land-Based Learning and the National Park Service.
Though trained as an ecologist, Dan has a strong background in nonprofit management, youth leadership development, curriculum design, and strategic planning. He is currently working with the Clean Air Community Trust to develop a service-based, green career training program for young adults.
Susan Sachs, Community Member
Susan is an Education Coordinator at the Appalachian Highlands Science Learning Center for Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
In her current job, Susan is tasked with telling the diverse research stories of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Her favorite method for teaching about the complex issues of the park is to get people of all ages involved in the research. She feels that citizen science is the best way to give people a personal connection to the park, its issues and resources.  She works primarily with middle, high school and college groups but has worked with younger ages throughout her career.
Susan grew up a city girl in Baltimore, MD, earned a BS degree in Labor Relations from the University of Maryland and worked for a labor union for two years.  She figured out that her true passion was environmental education while living in Israel for a year.  After traveling for another year, she came back to the states in 1991 to pursue her current career track working in education for county and national parks in Alaska, California, Arizona, Maryland and Washington, DC.
Susan has been living in Waynesville with her husband, their three dogs and a plentiful garden since 2001.

Beth Rhatigan, Parent
Beth is proud parent to Kayleigh (5th grade), Evan (2nd grade), Maggie (Kindergarten) who are in their first year at Evergreen. She and her husband have made Asheville their home since 1995.  Beth home-schooled the brood for 2-1/2 years.  She served as Treasurer for the parent/teacher organization at her children's previous school where she wrote and implemented the accounting processes and participated in creating the organizations by-laws.

Beth works part-time for Festival Network Online in Weaverville where she helps manage the office and provides customer service, marketing support and business analysis.

In her free time she loves to spend time outside, cook, and hang out with the kids.
Danielle Moser, parent
Danielle is the proud mom of 5th grader, Madison, and pre-schooler, Morgan (who will next year attend Evergreen's Kindergarten program). She has a passion for learning and believes Evergreen facilitates that passion in its students!
Professionally, she is a consultant for Lee Hecht Harrison, a global talent solutions company doing career and executive level coaching. She works in a virtual environment with clients from all over the US and occasionally international locations. She also is a managing partner supporting the marketing of her husband's computer service and support company, Piernone Solutions, LLC.
Danielle completed her BS in Business/Marketing from Providence College, before pursuing a Masters in Education (Human Resource Development) from the University of Southern Maine. Along the way, she also served as a Graduate Assistant with Dale Carnegie, and has completed Doctoral-level coursework in Leadership at the University of San Diego. Danielle has served on the Evergreen Board of Directors since last year.
Ron Maynard, Vice-President, parent
Ron is in his 7th year as an Evergreen parent. He and his wife, Kathy, have proudly seen their two older sons Hunter and Zach graduate, while youngest son, Colton, is in 4th grade.
Professionally, Ron shares his time between Mitchell's Tuxedos in Asheville Mall, which he and his wife own, and serving as a marketing consulting with Better Publishing producing "THE GUIDE" – Asheville's first digital phone directory.
Ron is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a BSBA Marketing and minor in Accounting. He used that expertise and partnered it with a passion for cooking to form Ronz Ribz and Asheville Hot Sauce Co.

At Evergreen, Ron serves as the vice president of the board of directors, and is active on several committees. He says, "Kathy and I are always looking for ways to give back to Evergreen because it is our family."
