Hi Evergreen Families,

This past weekend, we all paused to remember the anniversary of Hurricane Helene in various ways; reflecting on the loss and grief our community carries, but also how we showed incredible strength and care for one another. The work is ongoing and I am so thankful for all who continue to show up and rebuild in the community every day. Thank you to those of you who volunteered last Saturday as part of this as well!

And, as we look back, we also look forward. Our students continue to build their resilience, and know now that it includes leaning on each other, finding hope in hard moments, and remembering that we are stronger together. Thank you for the many ways you continue to nurture a spirit of care at home and in our school. Together, we carry forward the lessons of the past year with gratitude and hope.

Looking ahead, October is full of exciting learning and community moments. Please mark your calendars for Fall Family Nights on October 22nd and 23rd. More info to come, but plan to be here the evening of the 22nd (K, 2, 4, 6, 8th grades) and/or the 23rd (1, 3, 5, 7th grades) to celebrate your child(ren)’s learning and growth this fall! All events like these are on the Evergreen google calendar - you can save yourself time by adding the calendar to yours with a couple easy steps (Click the Google Calendar link above and look for the ‘Add Google Calendar’ link at the bottom left of the calendar). We can’t wait to see you and share student work with you, celebrate fall traditions, and keep building the strong connections that make Evergreen special.

There is still has room in the upcoming Dance and Climbing Clubs!

Climbing is always open to all ages, and we are also now inviting 3rd graders to All Around Dance. More information is linked in the EverAfter newsletter.

We are also trying to re-launch our middle school Volleyball club on Mondays in October and November. An email was sent to middle school parents dated Sept 24th.

This year we will be using Lifetouch for individual and class pictures.

Fall Family Nights

Part of our expectations of students is for them to present their work publicly. This practice is part of the EL Education model and is another way to make their work meaningful, by sharing it with you. Please make a plan to attend Fall Family Night with your child to see the expedition work they have been doing and celebrate their achievements.

We split the school population between two nights, this year that is:

Wednesday, October 22nd for Grades K,2,4,6, & 8
Thursday, October 23rd for Grades 1,3,5, & 7

If you are still not signed up by your student conference (today or tomorrow…), you can expect to hear from your classroom teachers! Please take the time to set this up today, if you’re having trouble, we are here to help!

If you have not set up an account with Infinite Campus, the all-in-one student information system, please do so before Student Led Conferences.

  • Your students already have accounts that you will be linked to.

  • You will need your student id number/s to complete this task, UNLESS you can find Kelly’s email from September 12th. (This is much easier, especially if you have multiple students!)

  • If you cannot find that email, and still need your student id number, please email Kelly and she will send that to you!

  • You will need to validate your email as a final step in the process

  • Also, this is how you opt in to texting for messages from the school.

Sept 25-26: Conferences

Fall Conferences for K-2 will be led by teachers without your students, please arrive in plenty of time to sign your child into the gym during your conference. The lower lot will be open Thursday Evening and Friday (if needed).

If you need child care during conferences on the 25th or 26th, you may bring them to EverAfter. This is free of charge! Due to conferences being split between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, one being during regular after school time and one during an all day care day, we have two different plans, so please read carefully:  

  • For Thursday afternoon, the 25th, we will host drop-in care on the lower playground and Multipurpose room from 3:55-8:00 (SEE ATTACHED MAP!)

  • For Friday morning, the 26th, we will host drop-in care in the gym, 7:55-12:00.

In both cases, you will need to bring your child(ren) in with you, speak with EverAfter staff, and sign them in and out. You MAY NOT just send them to wherever you see other kids. It'll take you a few minutes to do that; please plan accordingly so that you are not late to your conference time--your child's teachers' time is both valuable AND limited! We also ask that if you prefer not to use EverAfter, please keep your children with you, or just outside of whatever classroom you are conferencing in. Unsupervised kids will be sent back to their parents or to the main office. Thanks for keeping kids supervised and safe! Also for Friday morning, if you are not using all day care, please do NOT park in front of the gym before 10am—those spaces are reserved for working parents that need to drop their kids off quickly and get to work! Here is a campus map if you need more guidance.

If you are one of said working parents and in need all day care for your child on the 26th, and you are registered for EverAfter, please refer to information in the EverAfter Newsletter dated 9/17.

Supporting Kids Emotionally One Year After Helene

As we reach the one-year mark since Tropical Storm Helene, many of us feel a mix of emotions- grief, relief, hope, and fatigue. This anniversary can stir up strong feelings, not only in adults but in children too. Kids may revisit past emotions or begin to process the impact of Helene in new ways.

Below are signs of grief to look for in children, and ways to support them, especially during this time of heightened reminders.

How Grief May Show Up in Children

0–6 years

Irritability, extra crying, clinginess, separation fears, regression (e.g., thumb-sucking, bedwetting)

7–10 years

Worry about the event recurring, sadness, anger, acting out or shutting down

11–18 years

Risk-taking, withdrawal, mood swings, substance use, trouble expressing feelings

If at any point you feel your child needs extra support, please reach out to Annie Mast (K-4) or Rachel Snider (5-8) so that we can help children (and parents) in carrying whatever weight the past year may still hold.

Ways to Support Kids Now

  • Acknowledge the anniversary: Talk openly about why people are remembering — to honor what was lost and recognize the strength of the community. You may also reference this list for a list of community remembrance events.

  • Keep routines steady: Predictable schedules help kids feel safe.

  • Limit distressing reminders: News coverage and images may overwhelm some children. Be ready to turn off or redirect when needed.

  • Make space for expression: Encourage talking, drawing, storytelling, or quiet rituals (like lighting a candle).

  • Reach out for support: You’re not alone. Friends, counselors, and community events can help. There are two Haw Creek neighborhood events scheduled for the weekend listed below.

Elections for Student Council were held on Monday.

Levi (8th) was elected President, Caetlynn was elected Vice President, Tayo won the seat as Treasurer, and Grace will be the Student Council Secretary.

Classes also voted for Representatives for each homeroom/grade with Pharaoh repping eighth grade, Tate and Ruth representing seventh graders, Gavin and Drew in sixth, and Liam and Harper in fifth.

There are also a number of students who are part of the Student Council as general members: Barrett, Eris, Tudor, Caroline, Rose, Gabe, Reece, Zoey, Aubrey, and Izzy.

Congratulations to all who ran! Faculty and Staff look forward to working with the Student Council!

Community Circle - Sept 22nd

Community Circles happen at 8:45am in the gym.

Throughout the year we empower students to host a Community Circle. These events ask students to explore a central theme, connect it to their lives and work here at school, and present their ideas publicly. It is really wonderful to see the students supporting each other as each grade level presents their thoughts and reflections.

When we gather as a community, it is also an excellent time to host a DONATION DRIVE! On September 22nd we will be collecting donations to benefit Appalachian Community Relief.

Book Fair is a great way to kick off the school year! The colorful and fun displays get kids excited about reading and about buying books. Our goal each year is to make sure ALL of our families can enjoy Book Fair by asking those who can to share the love!

Each year we set up a fundraising page where families can ask for assistance with the Book Fair. The form is sent to our Student Services Manager who will help set your student up with a discreet payment method to use on the day their class visits the fair.

september is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Suicide is a difficult topic to talk about, but it’s also an important one. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10–24, which makes open and honest conversations more important than ever.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness, promote hope, and normalize seeking help. Suicide affects individuals, families, and communities in profound ways. It’s a complex issue that grows in silence but dwindles when we meet it with understanding, empathy, and open dialogue.

One common myth is that talking about suicide may put the idea in someone’s head. In reality, research shows that directly discussing suicide can reduce risk and help young people who may be struggling feel seen and supported.

By fostering empathy and raising awareness, we can contribute to a world where mental health is prioritized, and no one feels alone in their struggle.

Please also know that our school counselors are here to support your family. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.

Together, we can break the stigma, offer support, and help save lives.

An Invitation from East Asheville Public Library

The week of the anniversary of Helene, Buncombe County Public Libraries will be holding a tabletop puppet show on Wednesday the 24th from 4-5pm, about unexpected friendships and community as the characters handle navigating a storm and a flood themselves.

The libraries are open on the anniversary date of Helene, and since our side of town was hit hard, our library wanted to make space for the healing and recovery mindset to continue.  The library will be having drop-in activities all day, and our storytime in the morning will be focused more about ways to talk to kids about Helene and helping to process emotional regulation and more of that kind of topic than a typical storytime topic at the library.  We will be joined by a counselor from Rural Housing Authority to help navigate this topic and there will be a therapeutic art craft afterwards.

The afternoon is more geared towards our adults; there is going to be space for people to record their experiences with equipment loaned to us from Special Collections, our public archive downtown.  We will have therapy dogs during two different hours throughout the day, and there's going to be a somatic community circle.

If you have not set up an account with Infinite Campus, the all-in-one student information system, please do so before Student Led Conferences. Your students already have accounts that you will be linked to, and you will need your student id number/s to complete this task, UNLESS you can find Kelly’s email from last week which has an individualized link. (This is much easier- search for that email from her! It was sent on September 2nd and the sender is listed as ‘communications’.)

If you cannot find that email, and still need your student id number, please email Kelly and she will send that to you!

Infinite Campus is also available as a Mobile App. Guardians will want to download “Parent Campus” from whichever platform you use to download your fresh apps.

 

Friday’s Drill

A reminder: Tomorrow, Friday (9/12), we will be doing a lockdown drill as a school. This is a time for us to practice how to react in the event we have a danger to our students on campus. Today, teachers talked with students about it in a developmentally appropriate manner. You can expect to hear more information from your child’s grade level about what they discuss if you have not already! I would encourage you to talk with your kids about it as well, and please remind older students that their discussions and language about the drill will be different than what younger kids hear. 


Community Builder’s Picnic

Join Community Builders from 3-5pm on Sunday, September 21st! Families will meet up on the field at the school. BYO Picnic and Lawn Games!

Date Change! Community Circle now SEPT 22ND

Throughout the year we empower students to host a Community Circle. These events ask students to explore a central theme, connect it to their lives and work here at school, and present their ideas publicly. It is really wonderful to see the students supporting each other as each grade level presents their thoughts and reflections.

Community Circles happen at 8:45am in the gym.

When we gather as a community, it is also an excellent time to host a DONATION DRIVE! On September 22nd we will be collecting donations to benefit Appalachian Community Relief. Scholastic Book Fair - Sept 18th-26th

Book Fair is a great way to kick off the school year! The colorful and fun displays get kids excited about reading and about buying books. Our goal each year is to make sure ALL of our families can enjoy Book Fair by asking those who can to share the love!

Each year we set up a fundraising page where families can ask for assistance with the Book Fair. The form is sent to our Student Services Manager who will help set your student up with a discreet payment method to use on the day their class visits the fair.

Family Friendly Volunteer Opportunity - Sept 27th

September is Self Care Awareness Month!

How well do you take care of yourself? What does taking care of yourself look like? Is it waking up an hour earlier to squeeze in a workout, or staying up an hour later to read the last few chapters of a book you’re enjoying? Perhaps it’s a phone call to connect with a distant friend while you drink your Saturday morning coffee, or a weekly game night with the neighbors. Maybe you can’t think of anything at all that you do just for you, and if so, this week’s message is for you!

Self care is defined as “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.” However, self care looks different to everyone because we are all unique with different needs, as well as the hobbies or interests that we find relaxing, soothing, and recharging. 

Did you know that even just five minutes of intentional self care each day can show multiple benefits such as reduced stress and anxiety, improved mood, increased focus on tasks, and better overall well-being and life satisfaction? Having even short time frames of intentional activity can calm your nervous system, alleviate muscle tension, and offer a break from the stress of day-to-day demands. 

Here at Evergreen, we teach our students to tune into their own needs so they can be their best selves, so for the month of September (and beyond!), we are challenging parents to do the same! After all, parent self care is an essential part of ensuring we are able to care for our kids. In short, there will never be a wrong time to integrate some intentional self care into your life!

An Invitation from East Asheville Public Library

The week of the anniversary of Helene, Buncombe County Public Libraries will be holding a tabletop puppet show on Wednesday the 24th from 4-5pm, about unexpected friendships and community as the characters handle navigating a storm and a flood themselves.

The libraries are open on the anniversary date of Helene, and since our side of town was hit hard, our library wanted to make space for the healing and recovery mindset to continue.  We will be having drop-in activities all day, and our storytime in the morning will be focused more about ways to talk to kids about Helene and helping to process emotional regulation and more of that kind of topic than a typical storytime topic at the library.  We will be joined by a counselor from Rural Housing Authority to help navigate this topic and there will be a therapeutic art craft afterwards.

The afternoon is more geared towards our adults; there is going to be space for people to record their experiences with equipment loaned to us from Special Collections, our public archive downtown.  We will have therapy dogs during two different hours throughout the day, and there's going to be a somatic community circle. 


This year, more than ever, We really Need every penny.

Here are some simple things we can do as a collective that can make a big difference. The more participation we get in these programs, the greater the rewards for our school!
