Sue Ford

Music Enrichment/Marimba Band Director

Sue Ford teaches K-5 general music classes, middle school chorus and middle school marimba bands.  She also leads 7th and 8th grade girls' groups and is the director of the EMBE Marimba Band.
A lateral entry licensed music teacher, Sue has been a student and performer of music for over 40 years. She is a singer-songwriter, composer and arranger and plays a variety of instruments, including piano, percussion, guitar and banjo.  Some years ago, she began teaching music at Rainbow Mountain Children's School in Asheville and discovered a new passion for turning kids on to music.  She began teaching at Evergreen in 2003, when she founded and developed the marimba band program, using instruments used in her family's marimba band.  Her background includes classical training in piano and choir as well as study in a variety of non-traditional and self-taught techniques.  She particularly resonates with the Orff Schulwerk philosophy of music teaching and will continue to pursue Orff training as part of her professional development.
Sue Ford served as assistant director of Womansong of Asheville for 7 years and continues working with them as artistic consultant and accompanist. She received a BS in the Biology/Naturalist program at Appalachian State University and studied Environmental Education at Warren Wilson College.  She continues her ties with Warren Wilson by attending the Swannanoa Gathering during the summers.  Music is Sue Ford's main pastime but she also loves to dance, walk, and garden and spend time with her husband of 27 years, professional puppeteer, Hobey Ford and three daughters.
