Karl Kuhn

5th - 8th Grade Technology/Algebra II

As our algebra teacher, Karl brings a diverse and intense math background to our team. From a young age, he took on unusual math challenges from trying to trisect the angle in tenth grade to generalizing Pascal's triangle in his senior year in high school. Over the years his pursuit of strange math concepts has led to a generalization of Euclid's prime proof, a demonstration that relativity conforms to wave mechanics, and research into Goldbach's conjecture, as well as, essays on how math applies to our daily lives.

During his undergraduate years, Karl studied electronic engineering. By graduation, he had over 90 math intensive credits. He proceeded to work as an engineer for 6 years. During this time he specialized in A/D conversion of extremely low voltage and low current transducers, focusing on the conversion, scaling, noise rejection, and linearization of the transducer signals. This amounted to expeditionary math on a real scale. During this time he found that explaining a solution to others is sometimes more important than coming up with the solution.

From this background, he switched careers to education, bringing with him an appreciation for the four key elements of the NCTM Standards, and the ELOB approach to learning. Communicating ideas is core to both of these philosophies, and Karl has been praised for his ability to clarify various mathematical concepts for those with less mathematical backgrounds.

Karl is certified to teach math in both North Carolina and Pennsylvania. He passed all exams at the 75 percentile or higher. He has received special training from Project SEED, IMP, and GLOBE. Before moving to Asheville, he taught three years in a Philadelphia middle school and another in a Philadelphia charter high school. He has contributed an article to the popular science humor magazine AIR, a magazine that's popular among Nobel laureates.

Karl is very happy to work at Evergreen where he can be part of an educational dream in action.
