Jo Motzko

Lead Teacher, First Grade

Jo comes to Evergreen from Minnesota. She has a B.S. in Elementary Education from Mankato State University and has been teaching since 1993. She had four years of charter school experience before she became a lead teacher at Evergreen in 2003. She has presented at numerous state and national charter school conventions.
Jo is a member of the School Improvement Team. Her passion for learning all she can about early literacy prepared her to facilitate the Evergreen Professional Study Group with a focus on teaching literacy skills. As a certified mentor teacher, Jo works closely with first grade teacher Misty McDonough. This year she is pursuing Evergreen Master Teacher credentials.

Jo shares her love of history & music, gardening & yoga with her students. Conversational Spanish and daily song circle are used to expand communication skills in her classroom.

Jo lives in Black Mountain with her husband. She boasts two grown children and two adorable grandsons. Her free time is spent designing and knitting intricate projects, playing the guitar, and hiking the scenic trails of Western North Carolina.
