As part of our holistic approach to child growth and development, Evergreen Community Charter School provides a thoughtful, intentional program of study that helps children to develop the understanding, skills, attitudes, and habits that promote a lifetime of wellness and thoughtful decision making. The areas of development to be covered include the following:
· Self-awareness: Individual learning styles/profiles, personal challenges, goal setting and reflection, positive body image
· Healthy living: hygiene, nutrition, fitness, relaxation, personal safety, and knowledge of human body systems and maintenance
· Communication/Relationships: building and maintaining healthy relationships, clear and honest communication, conflict resolution, mediation, assertiveness
· Sexuality (developmentally appropriate content): anatomy & physiology; puberty; reproduction and reproductive health; gender identity; sexual orientation; sexuality and society, the law, and media; sexual abuse and harassment
Many of the topics that will be covered involve choices and the development of values that might not exactly match those
of all of our diverse community members. For this reason, parental involvement will be essential and our intent is to involve students and their parents in conversations about important issues. The School's responsibility will be to communicate clearly to parents in advance the goals and activities to be covered, then provide parents the opportunity to provide feedback, review materials, and/or make the decision for their children to opt out of any of the school-based activities or discussions.*
Finally, we are a community that embraces diversity and acknowledges differences in sexual preference, as well as gender identity and roles. Our goal is to teach our students to be sensitive and respectful in our diverse society while honoring multiple perspectives in an open dialogue.
