Evergreen and other charter schools receive funds from the state for each student that attends; however unlike public schools, they receive no financial support for buildings or grounds.

You Make The Difference

Evergreen’s Budget
The vast majority, 87% of our budget, is spent on staff and faculty salaries and benefits. Having a lead and associate teachers in most classes is a big expense – but worth every penny! Our highly skilled and dedicated teachers provide children individualized, differentiated instruction and the classroom community is small enough to allow for cooperative learning to take place with a minimum of behavior problems.

Instructional program and supplies is the next biggest piece of our budget. Evergreen offers Expeditionary Learning which stresses high levels of student engagement, achievement and character development. Because of our commitment to Environmental Education across the curriculum, we are able to provide opportunities for all of our students to learn about ecology and environmental stewardship and to develop a sense of respect, responsibility and wonder for the natural world. Our focus on outdoor adventure results in numerous outdoor activities, ranging from backpacking and camping to bird counts, river trips and stream clean-ups.  Rock climbing begins in the first grade and culminates with the pinnacle Outward Bound experience in the eighth grade.  Our programs advance the Evergreen mission of providing to our children the holistic education of their mind, body and spirit.

Another major expense is our facility. Facility costs encompass all that goes into maintaining and upgrading our beautiful 10 acre campus and 40-year-old building. The North Carolina Charter School Law prohibits charter schools from receiving state funds for capital expenses such as school buildings and grounds so we must fundraise to cover this.

Evergreen’s 2012-2013 budget is $3,662,362. We have a shortfall of $210, 646 which equals $515/student.

The Cost of Education
Each year the cost of education keeps rising. With yearly cuts from the state and increases in basic costs such as state-stepped salary scales to higher health insurance premiums and rising facility costs, it becomes progressively more expensive each year to provide the high-quality education you expect from Evergreen. We depend upon the generosity of parents, grandparents, corporations, foundations and community members to help compensate for this gap in funding.

We also depend on your volunteerism. The time you spend fulfilling your Parent Partnership Agreement, saves us money – money that we would otherwise have to spend on landscaping the school grounds, gardening, hiring additional office help, catering, event planning and more.

The Evergreen Fund
The Evergreen Fund is the funding vehicle that helps further Evergreen’s mission, fund our operations and keep our teachers at the state salary scale. Its power and impact comes from the combined strength of hundreds of gifts – just like yours – joining together to make lasting, lifelong change happen for our students. It’s a great time to add your name to the growing list of Evergreen families who have contributed to the Evergreen Fund. Your gift positively impacts our students, our strategic growth and our community. You make the difference.
