Karen has a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Florida State University and a Master's of Education degree from Vanderbilt University. She took time in between degrees to work a day job as a juvenile probation officer and a case manager with children and family services in the foster care and adoptions unit in Nashville, Tennessee.
When she wasn't working with kids, she was pursuing a songwriting and singing career in Nashville and producing her own CDs. After getting her graduate degree, Karen joined the Peace Corps in Namibia, Africa to work on teacher training followed up by a NOLS course sea kayaking through Prince William Sound in Alaska. She then moved on to California to teach math at the Crossroads School in Santa Monica for two years and Marin Country Day School, outside of San Franscico, for 6 years. Karen's interests are all about art, music and the outdoors.

Tony was born and raised in northern Virginia, and graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. After graduation he began working with middle school students as a ropes course instructor, environmental educator, and eventually program director, of the George Mason University Center for Outdoor Education.
He earned his M.S. in Environmental Education from the University of Montana, where he also served as program director of the Montana Natural History Center. He returned to Virginia to teach Social Studies to exceptional needs students. He now raises his two sons, one an Evergreen graduate and one a current Evergreen student, on their farm outside of Asheville, where he also runs a small organic herb greenhouse and Japanese maple nursery.

Stuart Miles is a native of Greenwood, South Carolina. Stuart graduated from the SC Governors School of Science and Mathematics and the University of Charleston.
He is an alumni of Teach for America and completed his Masters Degree in Science Education from Montana State University in 2010.
Stuart hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in 2005, and moved to Asheville in 2006. Stuart was named the 2010-2011 North Carolina Charter School Teacher of the Year, and is a 2011 recipient of the Career Award in Science and Mathematics teachers from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. In his free time he enjoys hiking, whitewater kayaking, reading, and Duke basketball. Stuart and his wife recently welcomed a new addition to their family when their daughter was born in May 2012.

Kathy is the middle school language arts teacher. She did her undergraduate work at Eastern Michigan University and her Masters in Middle Level Education at Central Michigan University. She has worked for nine years with middle school students and has been inspired, impressed, and honored every year.
Kathy has worked specifically with EL practices for three years, but has always believed in authentic, hands-on learning. Learning that is engaging and fun! In her personal life, Kathy loves to travel, write and read, hike, camp and play with her dog. When she is not teaching, you will usually find her outdoors enjoying nature or exploring new lands.

Sarah has a Bachelor of Science in Human Development & Family Studies from the University of Utah. She has a background in parent education and child development and has worked for various social service agencies over the previous eight years before working at Evergreen.
Sarah is originally from Texas and relocated to Asheville via Illinois in 2004. She is an outdoor enthusiast who loves camping, hiking and backpacking. Sarah started her Evergreen career with the EverAfter program. The next two years she was a 5th Grade Associate Teacher with Joy Neily. During the summer of 2010 and 2011 was co-director of the SummerCare program at Evergreen after working as a counselor in the summer of 2009. During the 2011-2012 school year Sarah was Behavior Support Specialist, Garden Coordinator and Assistant to the Student Services Director.

Marin is a native of Northern California where she received her BS in Environmental Biology and Botany at Humboldt State University. After college, she shared her knowledge and passion for the outdoors with youth teaching environmental education and leading trail restoration crews throughout the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. After some time, her love for travel took her eastbound to explore the mountains and lakes of New Hampshire, where she worked for the Appalachian Mountain Club and spent her spare time climbing peaks and exploring bogs.
Marin completed a MS in Environmental Studies and received her high school teaching certificate in biology from Antioch New England in Keene, New Hampshire. After graduate school she returned to California to help start The Met Sacramento, an innovative charter high school focused on project-based, community-centered, student-led learning. Since moving to Asheville six years ago, Marin’s energy has been focused at home raising up her two boys and a gaggle of other sweet little people. She is excited to be rejuvenating her professional life as a part of the Evergreen community.
