Kathy Norris began her teaching career in 1985 after graduating from Appalachian State University and moving to Colorado Springs. She continued her teaching journey in Raleigh, NC and St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana before moving to the mountains of North Carolina. She earned her Master’s in Education with a concentration in Behavior Disorders from Western Carolina University in 2000. Her teaching experiences range from kindergarten to college level. She has a husband who is a high school English and Academically Gifted teacher. Kevin and Kathy have two wonderful sons.
Their oldest son, Quentin, attends film school at the UNC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, and their youngest, Brandon, studies graphic arts at Appalachian State University. Kathy loves being with her family, meeting new people, and working in the field of education. She believes that every person can learn and has individual gifts, strengths and needs. Everyone’s strengths and gifts should be recognized, celebrated and encouraged in a supportive community of learners.

A native New Yorker, Carol graduated from Douglass College of Rutgers University with a BA in Speech-Language Pathology and from Vanderbilt University twice - once with a MS in Speech-Language Pathology and again with an Education Specialist degree in Human Development. She arrived in Asheville about a year ago, after an unexpectedly lengthy stay in Tennessee. While in Tennessee, she was a Speech-Language Pathologist specializing in teaching children with language processing deficits. Her passions include raising her two beautiful daughters, ages 4 and 8, swimming, quilting, redbuds and groundhogs. She is known in several states for her elaborate practical jokes. Consider this your heads up!

Toerin knew she wanted to work with exceptional children since she was in 7th grade. She began her work with as a summer teacher to children involved in the exceptional children recreation program. She graduated from James Madison University in Virginia in Special Education. After graduation, she moved to New York City and worked with kids on the street with Covenant House. Next, she left the country to work with families in Guatemala with Habitat for Humanity. She returned and spent many years working with the Hispanic/Latino community in Asheville. She worked in early intervention with Spanish-speaking families of children, birth-3. She became involved with Evergreen when her son started kindergarten. She began as a tutor with Evergreen and was hired to teach in the EC department for K-3rd grade. Both of her children attend Evergreen and her husband owns his own engineering and electrical contracting business. Toerin enjoys spending time with her family and can usually be found on the soccer fields watching her kids playing.

Linda Oberlitner has taught exceptional students of all ages in elementary, middle, and high school, as well as adults. Linda has a Master of Science degree in Special Education from Radford University in Virginia, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Michigan State University. She is dedicated to student success, and uses a wide variety of research-based strategies in the classroom. Linda is an artist, a musician, a gardener, and an outdoor enthusiast.

Born and raised in Asheville, Peggy grew up embracing mountain customs, heritage, geography, flora and fauna. A wonderful supportive husband, son, and daughter bless her life. They built their home in Broad River, and benefit daily from the spring they dug.
She worked her way through Mars Hill College and UNCA graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in History/minoring in Elementary- Intermediate Education (grades 4-9). She has taught in local school systems as well as the Juvenile Evaluation Center, Manpower Development, and Black Mountain Center. Peggy continued to pursue her passion for teaching and graduated from Western Carolina University with a Master of Education in Special Education, and more recently achieved National Board Certification in Early Childhood through Young Adulthood/Exceptional Needs Specialist.
It is her desire to teach every child to learn to the best of their abilities and feel confident and successful. She feels this is a philosophy nurtured at Evergreen Community Charter School!

Lynn Player has been working at Evergreen since 2007. She has a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from James Madison University and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Western Carolina University. After college, Lynn spent two years in Florida working as a wilderness youth counselor with at-risk youth for Eckerd Youth Alternatives. In 2004, Lynn spent some time in Boulder, Colorado where she worked with youth at the Colorado Youth Program in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Lynn moved to Asheville in the fall of 2004 and continued counseling youth at Stone Mountain School in Black Mountain. From these experiences Lynn gained understanding and compassion for youth who need extra support in life. This fueled her desire to learn more about working with students with disabilities and constantly inspires her to continue supporting their needs. You may have passed Lynn on the way to school as she often rides her bike to work. She would like to remind you to please pass with care. Lynn spends her free time working in her garden and going to see live music with her husband.

Kellie Wilson is a 2003 graduate from UNCA with a bachelors degree in Education and Literature. She has experience working with a diverse population of students and spent three years teaching at an alternative school in Shelby, NC. She believes helping kids succeed in the classroom and place value on their education is the most important and rewarding part of working within a school. For fun, she enjoys going to the movies, winning card games, and listening to a variety of music and radio programs.

Sarah has a Bachelor of Science in Human Development & Family Studies from the University of Utah. She has a background in parent education and child development and has worked for various social service agencies over the previous eight years before working at Evergreen.
Sarah is originally from Texas and relocated to Asheville via Illinois in 2004. She is an outdoor enthusiast who loves camping, hiking and backpacking. Sarah has worked in the EverAfter program, was a 5th Grade Associate Teacher for two years and is co-director of the Summercare program at Evergreen.
