Green Initiatives
Some of Evergreen’s green initiatives are:
- Creek and stream clean-ups clean and maintain Haw Creek)
- Student-led energy and trash audits
- Student-led waste-free lunch initiatives (students are encouraged to bring their lunches in reusable containers with cloth napkins and washable eating utensils)
- School-wide recycling
- Cold-Water Aquaculture Program (trout fry are raised in a cold water tank and released into the healthiest area stream determined by the students)
- Eco-fundraisers including the sale of compact fluorescent light bulbs, organic shade grown fair trade coffee and organic plants
- Studying alternative sources of energy and sustainable farming practices
- All school field trips follow Leave No Trace ethics
- All school communications are emailed to save paper (see under Press Room for these publications)
- Bio-diesel fuel tank for our buses
- Weather station (the students can monitor daily weather patterns)
- Roof-top solar panels (16 electricity producing photovoltaic modules provided through a grant from the National Energy Education Development)
- Greenhouse
- Vermiculture (composting with worms) system
- Rain gardens and bioswales in our parking lot to clean the stormwater run-off
- A healthy snack machine with snacks provided by the French Broad Food Co-op
- We were written up in Scholastic Instructor Magazine in an article called How Green Classrooms Are Reconnecting Kids with Nature
- Official Monarch Waystation certified bywww.monarchwatch.org to contributing to monarch conservation, an effort that will help assure the preservation of the species and the continuation of the spectacular monarch migration phenomenon
- Gardening projects with assistance from the Buncombe County Master Gardeners including a butterfly garden and organic vegetable and herb garden
