Adventure/Physical Education
Physical education can take many forms. Here at Evergreen we like to add adventure and character development to the mix. Led by Jo Smith, the teachers and students embark on journeys that challenge their “comfort zones”. These journeys include canoeing, climbing, rafting, backpacking, ropes courses, mountain biking, and even the modest journeys of blindfolded trust and honest feedback around a circle. Sure, we still do the well-known activities that you may come to expect from a P.E. class. Yet, we also make time for those other moments of triumph.

Expeditionary Learning provides a safe framework for students to step outside of the places that are comfortable. We teach our students that some of the most rewarding feats in life require a difficult step out to the “unknown”. With confidence and trust, our students work to challenge those fears that hold them back.

Starting in Kindergarten, we teach our students to set their own personal goals and compete against their own records. This creates the culture of positive competition, rather than rivalry. We progress through the grades with appropriate challenges and build their way to a 4-day Outward Bound course in 8th grade. This pinnacle experience is an accomplishment that signifies their years of hard work and determination, and they take pride in these journeys!
