Karen has a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Florida State University and a Master's of Education degree from Vanderbilt University. She took time in between degrees to work a day job as a juvenile probation officer and a case manager with children and family services in the foster care and adoptions unit in Nashville, Tennessee.
When she wasn't working with kids, she was pursuing a songwriting and singing career in Nashville and producing her own CDs. After getting her graduate degree, Karen joined the Peace Corps in Namibia, Africa to work on teacher training followed up by a NOLS course sea kayaking through Prince William Sound in Alaska. She then moved on to California to teach math at the Crossroads School in Santa Monica for two years and Marin Country Day School, outside of San Franscico, for 6 years. Karen's interests are all about art, music and the outdoors. She is looking forward to getting to know Asheville and seeing more of her family living on the east coast.

Matt was born and grew up in San Diego, where he earned his Master’s in educational technology and worked for twelve years as a middle school science and computer teacher, college instructional media instructor, technology integration consultant, and sheriff’s search and rescue instructor. He moved to Asheville with his wife and dog in the summer of 2005, and they’re all eagerly exploring their new home in the mountains.
Actually, exploring is his passion, in all respects of the word. He has traveled independently across six continents and has hiked extensively throughout the western U.S. and Canada. Matt is also an avid reader of a wide range of subjects, especially the natural and social sciences.
He is drawn to education because he loves learning about the world and its inhabitants, as well as sharing his knowledge and experiences with others in meaningful ways. He strongly believes in the unique vision that Evergreen is based on and feels honored to be working with such a dedicated and caring staff.

As a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, Paige became enthusiastic about the outdoors after she attended a 28-day Outward Bound course and a NOLS semester.  After instructing trips for Carolina Adventures and leading the UNC Outing Club, she graduated in 2005 and promptly relocated to Western North Carolina where she worked for NC Outward Bound for six years a field instructor in the mountains of NC and the waters of the Everglades, FL.  Paige was the logistics manager of a base camp, worked as a course advisor at the office, and contributed to the social justice program of NC Outward Bound before she went to school to become a licensed Massage & Bodywork Therapist.  Most recently she has worked as a year-round outdoor instructor for Asheville's TAASC program, a Chiropractic Assistant, a Massage Therapist at a spa, an instructor in British Columbia for Adventure Treks, and as a substitute teacher and EverAfter counselor at Evergreen CCS! She finds herself content, surprised, and entertained by the students and staff of ECCS every day!
