The years in between were spent teaching outdoor skills and leading paddling trips in Maine, the Carolinas and abroad. Joy has teaching experience in a variety of classrooms in Buncombe County Schools and Asheville City Schools. She is thrilled to join the team at Evergreen and looks forward to adventures in and out of the classroom with members of this wonderful learning community.

Joy lives in Fairview with her husband Dave and their son Zachary. They all love to get out and explore their surroundings, especially when this involves going on a river somewhere.

Erin is an experiential educator from the Bahamas, who has spent much of her life traveling by sea, horseback, and foot to explore the natural world.  With a BA in Environmental Education and Policy from Warren Wilson College, she began her career lobbying for environmental legislation in CT and NC, then quickly moved into environmental education where she has found many ways to educate people of all ages in the field.
For almost 20 years she has been a naturalist guide in many ecosystems, including the mangroves and rainforests of Costa Rica, the Bahamian Islands, the forests of the southeastern United States, the Pacific Coast, and the marine mammal mating grounds of the Atlantic Ocean.   As a Nature Tour owner/operator and President of a local NGO in the Bahamas, she designed environmental education programs, advocated for national park designations, coordinated international environmental research and service projects, and consulted on governmental environmental legislation.

Erin began teaching in the classroom when her children began school.  Fifth grade is Erin's favorite age group to work with, and she brings her hands-on approach to learning into the classroom with her.

Becky Kluge grew up in an intentional community on a farm in southern Maryland, attended Earlham College, majoring in Human Development and Social Relations, and then began working for the Voyageur Outward Bound School in SW Texas and Northern Minnesota as an instructor and administrator. After 8 years with Outward Bound she worked for the Nantahala Outdoor Center in NC as a canoe, kayak, and climbing instructor, as well as raft guide. She moved to Asheville with her husband Andy in 1997 and began instructional work with the NC Outward Bound School in corporate team building and for educators, work she still maintains today. The Woodson Wilderness Challenge, a therapeutic wilderness program for adjudicated youth, became her focus as the program coordinator and food coordinator for nine years until it closed in 2011. Before family responsibilities she was an adventure endurance racer, traveled to far away places, and pursued learning French and Spanish. She is an avid bike rider and paddler, loves gardening and cooking, singing acapella, practicing Iyengar yoga, and being with her family. Becky is mom to new ECCS 5th grader, Adam, and continuing FES 3rd grader, Abby Louise.
